1

Oscar got his job because he was gay.

It turns out that Michael (Steve Carell) didn’t just know that Oscar was gay before “Gay Witch Hunt.” He unintentionally hired Oscar because of his sexuality. “I actually told Michael during my job interview that I was gay,” Oscar revealed in the Season 3 episode. “And he laughed and laughed and laughed. He said I was the most hilarious person he’d ever met. He gave me the job on the spot. That’s the only reason why I’ve kept my mouth shut.”

Jim didn't go to Michael's party out of kindness.

Remember in “The Convention” when Michael keeps trying to get people to go to a party in his hotel suite? In the original cut of the episode, Jim (John Krasinski) finally shows up and it’s a sweet moment. It seems like he truly values his friendship with Michael. The truth is a little less kind. Turns out the main reason Jim went to hang out with Michael was to escape Dwight (Rainn Wilson) sucking up to his Stamford boss, Josh (Charles Esten).

Creed lived in the office for a time.

The rumor you always sort of suspected is very much true. A deleted scene in “The Coup” reveals this tidbit:

Dwight: Creed might be living here. We could charge him rent.
Michael: What?
Creed: Four nights a week, I stay here, and I live in this office. Everything is right here, it’s easy to get to. I sleep under my desk, and then three nights I stay at my place in Toronto. They don’t know about this job up there. It’s a welfare state.

Jim and Jan were ... friends?

Well, maybe not friends per se, but they sure were friendly. While Jim is still working at Stamford, Jan (Melora Hardin) walks in on him playing Call of Duty. After making small talk with Jim she says, “I gotta see Josh right now, but remind me to tell you what Dwight said to me earlier, OK? You’ll get a big kick out of it,” referring to that time Dwight called Jan to get Michael’s job. And we thought their relationship was limited to awkward glances at dinner parties.

Pam getting back together with Roy makes a lot more sense.

There’s no one scene that shows this. But The Office Season 3 is packed full of deleted moments that show Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Roy (David Denman) joking with each other and flirting over Pam’s desk. Suddenly Pam’s return to her ex-fiance looks a lot less desperate and more understandable.

The ball in "Grief Counseling" really was from HR.

Did you ever think it was kind of weird that the Dunder Mifflin crew handled Ed Truck’s death by passing around a ball? It turns out that toy really was supplied by HR. But it was never supposed to be used to talk about death. “Yeah, the ball-throwing exercise is in the binder,” Toby (Paul Lieberstein) says in a cut interview. “It’s in the section marked, ‘Fun Ways To Make Brainstorming Sessions Explode With Excitement and Creativity.'”

Michael has a hot take on 'Home Alone.'

Everyone loves Home Alone, right? Wrong. In “Grief Counseling” Pam reveals that Michael Scott has some harsh criticisms for the classic Christmas movie. “Michael once told me that Home Alone is the saddest movie ever,” Pam says. “When I asked him why he said, ‘Because the whole family forgets the kid at home. There is nothing funny about that!'”

Not only is that a surprisingly good and accurate take, it also helps the episode make sense. Of course Michael would think Home Alone is a tragedy. He hates being left out and his biggest fear is being alone. Michael’s musings on Home Alone paired with his over-the-top reaction to Ed Truck’s death are what cause Pam to throw a bird funeral. She’s not trying to honor a manager she didn’t know or a bird. She’s trying to show Michael people will care when he dies.

Michael was a lot closer to getting fired than you think.

One plot point that was always on The Office’s chopping block? The many, many meetings Jan had with Michael to discuss his performance. Pam wasn’t the only one who kept track of Michael on an hourly basis. Jan took on that responsibility herself several times. Michael was essentially minutes away from getting fired. A deleted scene in “Branch Closing” even shows Jan telling Michael that he will be laid off.

Angela was jealous of Kelly.

You may have forgotten about Dwight and Kelly’s (Mindy Kaling) kiss during Season 2’s Christmas party. But you know who didn’t forget? Angela (Angela Kinsey). In “Diwali” Angela has an extra judgmental aside, saying, “Certain people in this office are a little too obsessed with things from India.”

That same deleted scenes shows Ryan (B.J. Novak) trying to convince his coworkers to go to Diwali because it would make Kelly happy. He quickly backs down and suggests they bail, but still. For half a second Ryan was almost a good boyfriend.

Bob Vance offered Phyllis an illegal job.

It turns out that the original cut of “Branch Closing” offered a lot more footage of your Dunder Mifflin faves figuring out what they would do without paper. There are a bunch of interesting tidbits like Bob Vance buying up the warehouse or Ryan freaking out over Michael’s reaction. Yet the most interesting revelation has to do with Phyllis (Phyllis Smith). In an interview Phyllis reveals that her husband Bob Vance has offered to make her a Senior Advisor even though she wouldn’t have to come into work and would be paid in cash under the table. After realizing that this offer is absolutely illegal, Phyllis starts to grin.

There's an origin story to Prison Mike.

the-office-secret-11

You heard that right. Prison Mike isn’t something Michael came up with on the spot during “The Convict.” Oh no, he’s actually one of Michael’s original characters. “I came up with Prison Mike during improv class,” Michael reveals. “I was doing a scene, these two college kids would not stop talking. So I became Prison Mike. And I said, ‘Hey shut up, or I’ll stab you twos.’ And they never said anything to me again.” The rest is history.

Kelly and Ryan had sex in a dumpster.

We already revealed that “A Benihana Christmas” cut one of the funniest moments from Kelly and Ryan. But did you know that their fight ended with this conflicted couple having sex in a dumpster? Talk about a trashy relationship.

Dwight has only ever taken one vacation.

That vacation was to Roswell, New Mexico, and while he was away Jim shipped him his desk. Who wants to bet that Dwight actually found some aliens?

Toby is creepier than you think.

We all knew that Toby had a thing for Pam. But did you know that little crush dipped into pseudo-stalker territory? In “Traveling Salesman” Pam takes the office’s coffee orders. When she asks Toby for his he asks for a chai latte, to which she jokes that she may be stalking him because she’s going to get that too. Only when Pam returns with Toby’s coffee, he immediately throws it away. That’s a little less sweet unrequited love and a bit more Pam, change your locks.

Pam was once friends with Angela.

This nugget also appears in “Traveling Salesman.” The final cut of the episode showed these two ladies getting friendly. But one interaction proves that Jenna Fischer’s real life friendship with Angela Kinsey isn’t as crazy as it may seem. Of course Angela’s pleasantness doesn’t last for long, and naturally it ends over a cat.

Pam: Hey Angela. I got good news today too. I won an art contest.
Angela: That’s great, Pam. I like having these little moments with you. You know what? Sprinkles recently had kittens.
Pam: Oh!
Angela: I would like to offer you the dominant male. His name is Ash.
Pam: Oh. I don’t think so. But thanks. My building manager is … you understand.
Angela: Well then. Have a nice day.

Dwight almost became a manager at Staples.

the-office-secret-16

Dwight’s job at Staples seemed like a major career demotion, and in many ways it was. But did you know that Dwight was on track to become what he wanted most: a manager? In “The Return” Dwight’s boss mentions that even though it typically takes employees six months to become manager qualified, Dwight is eligible to take the next level after roughly a week of work. Of course, he goes back to Dunder Mifflin. But the fact that he chose to return even tough he had a bright future ahead at Staples changes his decision a lot.

Bob Vance has a second family.

And apparently they live in Vietnam. Before Phyllis’ wedding, the bride-to-be has this WTF conversation with Pam.

Phyllis: Would it be weird for you if I sat you with Jim and Karen at my wedding?
Pam: I don’t think so.
Phyllis: Good. I don’t want any more drama at my wedding. I already have baby mama drama. Bob’s other family is coming in from Ho Chi Minh City.

Pam actually confronted Phyllis about her copycat wedding.

the-office-secret-18

About Pam not causing any drama? That was a pipe dream, though it was admittedly Phyllis’ fault. If you remember, Pam spends the entirety of Phyllis’ wedding furious because her coworker stole all of her ideas for her canceled wedding with Roy. In the typical cut of this episode, Pam stews silently before running off with Roy. Well, apparently old Pamy at least tried to get what she wanted in this deleted scene.

Phyllis: I don’t know if you noticed but Bob and I borrowed your idea for the after-dinner mints that you were going to have at your wedding.
Pam: Yeah that, and also everything. I mean, the dress and the flowers and the fish and the cake…
Phyllis: You really sound like you’re keeping track
Pam: Oh I just —
Phyllis: You know, I could make an announcement if what you want is credit.

Oscar wanted to end things with Gil.

the-office-secret-19

Any diehard Office fan remembers the Lonely Hearts Party that emerged during the show’s Valentine’s Day episode in Season 5. If you need a refresher, Michael, Kevin, Kelly, Oscar, and a few other single coworkers throw a singles mixer. All throughout that episode Oscar pines for his ex-boyfriend Gil. But apparently some of that heartbreak may be theatrics. “If either of these guys are put in charge of the office, I will transfer to Albany,” Oscar says in “Beach Games.” “Gil can come if he wants. I’m kinda looking for a way out of that relationship anyway. I think I might try girls for a while. Angela thinks I can cross over. We’ll see.”

20

Schrute Bucks came from Dwight's childhood.

the-office-secret-21

And you better believe it’s just as insane as the concept of inter-office fake money. We’ll let Dwight take it away.

“Schrute Bucks are legal tender anywhere in this office park. They are fully backed by the confidence our employees have with this company and in me: their leader,” Dwight says in a deleted scene. “I got the idea from our farm. We had a small roadside family store which sold slightly irregular beets and clothing. The Schrute children were paid an allowance in store credit. We used it to buy clothing and sundries. The prices were terrible. I still owe my great aunt thousands of Schrute Deutsch Marks. She charged enormous interest on the debt. It was hard to dig ourselves out of that hole. Our cousin Higle could have been a great athlete. But he bought a pair of irregular footie pajamas from the family store and his legs grew unevenly. Now he can only run in broad elliptical patterns. When he would run for the bus he would have to aim 45 degrees to the right and the natural curve of his warped leg path would eventually guide him to the door.”

That’s a lot of strange for one throwaway joke. But we wouldn’t expect anything less from Dwight.

Creed tried to exploit the Schrute Buck system.

What happens when you trap two weirdos in close quarters? Absolute chaos. In a deleted scene, Creed (Creed Bratton) prints off about 2.1 million Schrute Bucks and asks for their monetary equivalent. When Dwight refuses, Creed threatens to flood the fictional market with his counterfeit versions of a fake currency, making this already worthless currency even more worthless. All that for $200.
