Tom Hanks is generating Oscar buzz in the Western drama News of the World while Carey Mulligan is dishing out sweet, sweet revenge in the comedy/thriller Promising Young Woman. And if you are in the mood for a good science fiction flick, Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan’s Synchronic is ready to take you far, far away from here

What are the best movies to watch right now? Check out the great thrillers, dramas and action films you can buy or rent this weekend.

Promising Young Woman

The highly-anticipated thriller Promising Young Woman has finally made its journey to the streaming screens. Starring Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Laverne Cox and more, this provocative film centers on Cassie: a wickedly smart and cunning young woman who lives a crazy double life by night. But when she has an unexpected run-in with someone from her past, she embarks on a revenge vendetta for all those who had a hand in the rape and subsequent suicide of her best friend. Provocative, smart and deliciously-thrilling, Promising Young Woman is a revenge flick that stands out from the pack.

News of the World

Tom Hanks stars in News of the World, a drama that brings some heart and soul into the wild West. The film takes place five years after the Civil War and follows Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks) as he travels to remote towns and reads the news of the world to the otherwise-ignorant citizens. His routine is cut short, however, when he crosses paths with a 10-year-old girl who was kidnapped by the Kiowa people. Forced to return the child to her aunt and uncle, Kidd agrees to escort the young girl across the vast and dangerous Texas desert, and the journey the two embark upon soon turns into a desperate fight for survival. News of the World would have been fantastic in theaters — and is already generating some awards buzz for Hanks — but we are thrilled we get to watch it now, available for rent on demand.

The Disaster Artist

The Franco brothers (Dave and James Franco, for those unaware) team up in the bizarre dramedy The Disaster Artist. Based on a true story, the film centers on the friendship between Hollywood outsider Tommy Wiseau (James Franco) and budding actor Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) and their defiant pursuit to create what is now considered one of the worst films of all time, The Room. Who would have thought that a movie about one of the worst movies ever made would be so popular? Very meta, and very perfect for the tone set in The Disaster Artist.
