Fairies Face Off in Netflix’s ‘Fate: The Winx Saga’ Trailer

Being a fairy isn’t all sparkles and spells in Netflix‘s upcoming drama Fate: The Winx Saga. In today’s first full trailer for the new YA series, Netflix wastes no time in showing us the dark side of magical powers as fairies at Alfea boarding school learn the limits and dangers of their strange and thrilling gifts in the Otherworld.

Fate: The Winx Saga follows five fairies at Alfea — Bloom (Abigail Cowen), Stella (Hannah van der Westhuysen), Aisha (Precious Mustapha), Terra (Eliot Salt), and Musa (Elisha Applebaum) — as they navigate friendship, love, and the responsibilities that come with their magical powers.

In today’s trailer, Bloom begins to master her fairy magic, which is controlled by her emotions. Using her power over fire, she discovers she’s got plenty more in her than just a spark to light up some kindling. “Bloom could be one of the most powerful fairies the Otherworld has ever known,” a voiceover says in the trailer as Bloom whips flames around using just her fingertips.

While Bloom and her friends begin to own and take control over their magic, dark and terrifying threats loom just beyond Alfea, past “the Barrier” where monsters like the “burned ones” live. “Be thankful you’ve never seen a burned one,” a student is cautioned in the trailer. And Bloom faces other dangers too, from an unnamed force which she warns her friends is coming after her, to lies she’s being sheltered by, and even “a war on the horizon.” Thankfully, she’s got her wits and fiery powers to keep her safe.

The six-part series comes from The Vampire Diaries‘ Brian Young and executive producers Judy Counihan and Kris Thykier from Archery Pictures, along with Cristiana Buzzelli and Joanne Lee from Rainbow. The series also stars Sadie Soverall, Freddie Thorp, Danny Griffin, Theo Graham, Jacob Dudman, Eve Best, Robert James-Collier, Josh Cowdery, Alex Macqueen and Eva Birthistle.

Fate: The Winx Saga premieres on Netflix Friday, Jan. 22. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
