Brie Larson’s ‘Lessons in Chemistry’ Series Lands at Apple TV+

Brie Larson is cooking up her latest project over at Apple TV+, where her new drama Lessons in Chemistry just got a straight-to-series order. Larson is set to star in and executive produce the show, which is based on author Bonnie Garbus’ upcoming debut novel of the same name.

Lessons in Chemistry takes place in the 1960s, when scientist Elizabeth Zott (Larson) is left frustrated by society’s expectations of women, which have made it all the more difficult for her to pursue her dream career. “When Elizabeth finds herself pregnant, alone and fired from her lab, she musters the ingenuity only a single mother has,” Apple teases with the series’ official description. “She accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives – and the men who are suddenly listening – a lot more than recipes… all the while craving a return to her true love: science.”

Larson’s new show comes from Apple Studios, and will be written and executive produced by Academy Award-nominee Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich). Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan join the project as executive producers along with Larson and Grant through Aggregate Films.

Although Garbus’ “Lessons in Chemistry” isn’t expected until 2022, the novel has already stirred up plenty of excitement aside from today’s Apple news. When it first debuted at the Frankfurt book fair this fall, the book was described as “a breakout success,” and has since been sold in more than 35 countries around the world.

With Lessons in Chemistry, Larson will have signed on to two Apple TV projects, her first being a drama based on the life of CIA operative Amaryllis Fox which was announced last summer. Although Larson has gained recognition for film roles in Captain Marvel and Room — which earned her an Oscar in 2015 — she’s also established a successful TV career over the years, with starring roles in United States of Tara and Raising Dad. Next up for Larson is a return to the MCU with the 2022 film Captain Marvel II, in which she’ll reprise her role as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel.
