Our Friend

Jason Segel, Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson star in Our Friend, a tearjerker of a film about how far you would go for your friends. Based on the true story written up in Esquire back in 2015, the drama centers on the Teague family —journalist Matt (Casey Affleck), wife Nicole (Dakota Johnson) and their two young daughters —and how their lives are turned upside down when Nicole is diagnosed with terminal cancer. As Matt becomes increasingly overwhelmed by the day-to-day responsibilities of running a house, earning money and caring for his sick wife, the couple’s best friend Dane Faucheux (Jason Segel) offers to move in and help lighten the load. Nobody could have guessed how impactful this one decision would become, but we cried our eyes out watching it all unfold in Our Friend, now available to rent on VOD.

No Man’s Land

It seems like the cinematic world is all about Westerns this month, because just a week after Tom Hanks’ News of the World came out on VOD, No Man’s Land has ridden onto the screen. When border vigilante Jackson Greer (Jake Allyn) accidentally kills a Mexican immigrant boy, he flees on horseback across the border to Mexico to become a gringo, or “illegal alien.” Chased by Texas Rangers and Mexican federales, Jackson journeys across mountains and deserts to seek forgiveness from the dead boy’s vengeful father, and even falls in love along the way. Starring Frank Grillo, Andie MacDowell, George Lopez and more, No Man’s Land is a migrant drama film with a lot of heart.

The Rest of Us

The Rest of Us is a drama film about four strong women and the dead man who brings them together. Starring Heather Graham (The Hangover), Sophie Nélisse (The Book Thief), Jodi Balfour (For All Mankind) and Abigail Pniowsky, the film is about a divorced mother and her daughter who must deal with living in the same house as her ex-husband’s second wife and daughter following his unexpected death. All four women — despite their generational differences — all find themselves at some sort of crossroads, be it losing childhood innocence or entering college years. Although the man who bonds them was not-so great, perhaps he did one great thing by bringing them together.
