Luke Evans Joins Tom Hanks’ ‘Pinocchio’ Film at Disney+

Luke Evans is returning to Disney for his latest project, the Disney+ film Pinocchio. Evans, who previously starred as Gaston in 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, will play The Coachman in director Robert Zemeckis‘ live-action fairytale movie. Evans joins costar Tom Hanks, who is set to star as Geppetto, Deadline reports.

Disney’s Pinocchio, which was first announced at Disney’s Investor Day last December, comes from writers Zemeckis and Chris Weitz and producers Andrew Miano and Weitz through their company Depth of Field. Although it was originally slated for a theatrical release, Pinocchio has since been confirmed as a Disney+ film and will be heading straight to the streaming service, instead. Disney will also be releasing another remake, the Jude Law and Yara Shahidi movie Peter Pan and Wendy, through Disney+.

Zemeckis’ Pinocchio film will update the classic hit for a new audience, retelling the story of a living puppet who yearns to be a real human. With the help of his cricket friend, Pinocchio sets off on an adventure to prove he’s just like any other young boy. The film, which originally premiered in 1940, is based on the 1883 Italian children’s novel, “The Adventures of Pinocchio,” by Carlo Collodi. The latest Pinocchio film, a live-action adaptation from director Matteo Garrone, premiered in theaters last month. Guillermo del Toro is working on his own Pinocchio adaptation, a darker version of the classic tale starring Cate Blanchett, Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton and more. Del Toro’s version is expected to premiere later this year.

Evans is no stranger to Disney, and is set to reprise his Beauty and the Beast role in a prequel series at Disney+ with his costar Josh Gad, who stars as LeFou. Along with his role as Gaston, Evans is known for his work in Dracula Untold, Fast & Furious 6, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and more. His upcoming projects include Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers, the crime thriller Crisis, and Bear Season.
