Netflix’s ‘Lupin’ Will Return in Summer 2021

Lupin, Netflix’s latest hit, will return for Part 2 in Summer 2021, the streaming giant announced on Thursday. Part 2 of the French Original will contain five new episodes directed by Ludovic Bernard (The Climb) and Hugo Gélin (Love at Second Sight).

Inspired by the adventures of Arsène Lupin, Lupin stars Omar Sy as Assane Diop, a professional thief and custodial worker at the Louvre who plots a daring jewelry heist. Of course, Assane isn’t just in it for the money: he ultimately hopes to exact revenge for the death of his father, who died by suicide in prison after he was framed for theft by his employer, Hubert Pellegrini. Armed with his charisma and talent for deception, Assane sets out to expose Hubert’s criminal past, but before long, he’s drawn into a dark web of secrets.

Since its release in early January, Lupin has proven to be a huge success for Netflix. The thriller is the first French Original to nab a spot on Netflix’s Top 10 list in the U.S., peaking at #3 on January 10. Outside the U.S. Netflix claims that Lupin has appeared at #1 in the platform’s Top 10 list in ten different countries, although the streaming giant declined to specify which countries are included in this group.

Critics have also praised the thriller, which currently boasts a 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As Joel Keller wrote in his review for Decider, “Lupin‘s twists and turns, and a fine performance from Omar Sy (who is also the show’s artistic director, helping to establish the series’ lavish look) makes the show eminently watchable.”

Lupin Part 1 contained five episodes, all of which were written or co-written by creators George Kay and François Uzan. Episodes 1, 2, and 3 were directed by Transporter alum Louis Leterrier, while Episodes 4 and 5 were directed by Chilean filmmaker Marcela Said.

In addition to Sy, Lupin stars Hervé Pierre as Hubert Pellegrini; Nicole Garcia as Anne Pellegrini; Clotilde Hesme as Juliette Pellegrini; Ludivine Sagnier as Claire, Assane’s ex-wife; Antoine Gouy as Benjamin Ferel; Shirine Boutella as Lieutenant Sofia Belkacem; and Soufiane Guerrab as Youssef Guedira.
