Noah Baumbach Signs Exclusive Netflix Deal

After releasing his hit film Marriage Story on the platform in 2019, Noah Baumbach is teaming up with Netflix again. The filmmaker just signed a major deal with Netflix, Deadline reports. Under the deal, Baumbach “will exclusively write and direct films for Netflix for the next several years,” according to the outlet.

Baumbach’s deal comes after the director worked with Netflix on multiple projects over the years, starting the the 2017 Adam Sander film, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). His Marriage Story, a drama starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern, was an awards hit with six Oscar nominations.

“When I started in the film industry I dreamed of having a home,” Baumbach said. “It took me about 25 years but it was worth the wait. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be making movies with Ted and Scott and everyone at Netflix, who are wonderful collaborators and friends and family.”

Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer, added, “For more than two decades Noah has been writing and directing some of the most personal and influential films in American cinema. When we started to work together almost 4 years ago, he immediately felt like family and I’m thrilled we’re finally making it official.”

Next up for Baumbach is White Noise, a film based on author Don DeLillo’s novel of the same name. While casting news hasn’t been confirmed, Baumbach’s partner and frequent collaborator, Greta Gerwig, is rumored to star in the movie alongside Driver, with filming set to begin later this year. Baumbach is also working on Barbie, a live-action film directed by Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, which is based on the popular fashion doll.

While Marriage Story stands out as Baumbach’s latest hit, he’s been working steadily since the ’90s, writing films like Kicking and Screaming, Frances Ha, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Margot at the Wedding, and more. His 2005 film The Squid and the Whale earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
