As GameStop stock unexpectedly rises, Adam McKay‘s 2015 financial drama The Big Short is getting a bump of its own. The Academy Award winning film is getting a second wave in light of the Reddit-fueled GameStop short squeeze, in which amateur investors were able to significantly drive up the price of GameStop stock.
According to the New York Times, Wednesday’s surge increased GameStop’s value by more than $10 billion. The major boost comes after the company’s value was estimated at $2 billion in December. As of yesterday, it’s now worth $24 billion. The news rocked the financial world, including a real life figure featured in The Big Short, an investor in GameStop who expressed his worry with the current situation on social media.

BIG SHORT GAMESTOP: HOW IS THE MOVIE CONNECTED TO THE NEWS?
While the events portrayed in The Big Short happened long before this week’s GameStop news, there is a small connection. Michael Burry, a GameStop investor and Scion Asset Management boss who is portrayed by Christian Bale in The Big Short, chimed in on the GameStop situation on Twitter.
“If I put $GME on your radar, and you did well, I’m genuinely happy for you,” Burry tweeted, per Business Insider. “However, what is going on now – there should be legal and regulatory repercussions. This is unnatural, insane, and dangerous.”
There’s also the Trevor Noah connection, which is a bit lighter than Burry’s warning message. As a play on Margot Robbie’s famous Big Short scene, The Daily Show host helped explain what happened with GameStop stock to his viewers.
“Basically, there’s a group of people on Reddit who don’t use the stock market to invest, they use it to gamble,” Noah as Robbie explains in the clip. “And, yeah, that’s what a lot of serious investors do too, but these guys on Reddit are more honest about it and they love to troll the people who aren’t.”
