Wonder Woman 1984 proved superheroic with viewers over Christmas week. According to Nielsen‘s latest estimate, Wonder Woman 1984 was viewed for a total of 2.3 billion minutes during its first few days on HBO Max. This figure far outpaces total viewership for the previous week’s winner Soul, which was viewed a total of 1.7 billion minutes on Disney+ throughout the week.
While HBO Max titles have not been included on Nielsen’s weekly updates in the past — streaming clients include Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Disney+ — the ratings agency is working with WarnerMedia to include HBO Max statistics, and Wonder Woman 1984 serves as the first title under that new partnership. According to Nielsen, Wonder Woman 1984 was viewed by just shy of 2.3 billion minutes during the week of December 21 to December 27, a figure that outpaced viewership of Soul by 35% and Netflix’s Bridgerton by 87% (1.4 billion minutes) during that same time period.
Wonder Woman 1984‘s success (and that of Soul and Bridgerton, by the same logic) is even more impressive considering that the film debuted towards the end of the week, on December 25. With this in mind, we can safely say that Wonder Woman 1984 was viewed for more than 2 billion minutes in just three days, a truly remarkable feat.
“The impact of Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max cannot be understated. As was announced on Wednesday during our earnings and as this Nielsen data shows, it was a huge holiday gift to the consumer at a time when they wanted and needed it,” said Andy Forseell, EVP and General Manager, HBO Max. “This partnership with Warner Bros. of course continues throughout the year but it began with Wonder Woman’s arrival on Christmas Day to great success.”
As the world of streaming continues to expand, Nielsen’s Weekly Streaming Top 10 lists provide some clarity about the popularity of various titles. Considering that the major services remain cagey about their viewership numbers, we should all thank Nielsen for providing this very essential service.
