Brandy’s 1997 ‘Cinderella’ Musical Will Stream on Disney+

Anything is possible in the Disneyverse. On Thursday morning, Disney announced that Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella will finally be available to stream on Disney+ beginning Friday, February 12. The beloved musical stars Brandy as the Disney princess and features performances from Whitney Houston, Whoopi Goldberg, and more stars.

Released on November 2, 1997 during The Wonderful World of Disney on ABC, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella debuted to 60 million viewers and became an instant favorite among fans. The made for TV musical features original songs written by famed musical duo Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein — including “Impossible,” “In My Own Little Corner,” “Ten Minutes Ago,” “A Lovely Night,” and “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” — and went on to earn seven Emmy Award nominations, one of which was for Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Special.

The 1997 musical adaptation stars Brandy as Cinderella, a young woman whose cruel stepmother (Bernadette Peters) prevents her from going to the Royal Ball. However, with the help of the Fairy Godmother (Whitney Houston), Cinderella stuns ball-goers with her transformation into a princess and catches the eye of a dashing young prince (played by Pablo Montalbán).

In addition to leads Brandy and Houston, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella stars Whoopi Goldberg as Queen Constantina, Victor Garber as King Maximillian, Pablo Mantalbán as Prince Christopher, Jason Alexander as Lionel, Bernadette Peters as the evil stepmother, Veanne Cox as Calliope, and Natalie Desselle as Minerva. The 1997 movie was directed by Robert Iscove, written by Robert I. Freedman, and choregraphed by Rob Marshall. Whitney Houston, Debra Martin Chase, Craig Zadan, and Neil Meron served as executive producers, with Chris Montan serving as a producer and Robyn Crawford as an associate producer.

Upon its addition to Disney+ on February 12, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella will join the platform’s “Celebrate Black Stories” collection, a curated list of titles that also includes SoulBlack PantherBlack Is KingHidden Figures, and more.
