JoJo Siwa Live-Action Musical ‘The J Team’ to Premiere on Nickelodeon

JoJo Siwa is bringing her life story to the small screen. While she’s only 17 years old, the entertainer and former Dance Moms star has got plenty of stories to share, which will all be a part of her movie musical in the works at Nickelodeon, The Wrap reports. Siwa shared the exciting news with host Jimmy Fallon during her appearance on last night’s episode of The Tonight Show

“So I, right now, am in Vancouver, Canada,” she began. “And I’m so excited, me and my friends at Nickelodeon, we are making a musical and I am so pumped up about it. This musical is centered around my life, and also centered around being yourself and centered around staying true to who you are. And even when the world is telling you, ‘It’s not going to happen. It’s not going to happen,’ you are believing, because you’re you. And that’s what this movie is all about.”

The feature-length film, which is titled The J Team, stars Siwa, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Laura Soltis, Julia Marley, Kerrynton Jones and Kiara T. Romero. According to Nickelodeon, The J Team “follows a young girl who is kicked out of her dance troupe and forced to rediscover what dance and friendship mean to her while finding her true ‘sparkle’ in the process.” Siwa plays a character named JoJo, whose love for dance is tested when her longtime teacher retires and is replaced by a “sparkle-hating” dance instructor, Poppy (Campbell-Martin). Determined to stick with her sport and enter an upcoming dance competition, JoJo and her friends try to stick with their new teacher’s rules, but JoJo is kicked out when she can’t hide who she really is.

Along with her starring role in the musical, Siwa also contributed to The J Team‘s soundtrack. “I have worked so hard on this soundtrack,” Siwa told Fallon. “There’s six original songs on the soundtrack, and then two of my old songs. But one of them is like a full remix and it’s so much fun.

“But from the six original songs, I created 27 to narrow it down to six,” she continued. “So it’s been a process, but it’s been so much fun. Now that we’re actually here, it’s happening. We’ve been in quarantine, in rehearsals. We have an incredible director, we have an incredible writer, obviously, my friends at Nickelodeon … I’m so excited!”
