Jimmy Kimmel Says Bill Maher Is Like Tom Brady of Late Night TV on HBO’s ‘Real Time’

Last night on Real Time with Bill Maher, Jimmy Kimmel and Bill Maher talked about Maher selling his 10-year stake in the New York Mets and his parking spot that reads “D. Strawberry” to their individual late night endeavors to kick off this week’s episode, with Maher’s interviewee comparing the host to starting Super Bowl quarterback Tom Brady.

Tomorrow’s Super Bowl LV will see Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers face Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs. Maher complained, “If I have to listen to sportscasters or anyone else on TV sucking Tom Brady’s d–k …” After constantly having to listen to it, Maher said he has been praying, “Please, Mahomes, beat this motherf–ker!”

The famed host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live replied that even though “Brady has certainly won his share of everything,” he is still rooting for him on Sunday for one opinion that he believes everyone shares. “This is a guy who was told by his employer …” he said, preparing to describe how Brady winning would be a giant middle finger to the New England Patriots, then something else came to mind.

“By the way, this reminds me a little bit of you,” he told Maher. “When you were at ABC, they said, ‘Alright, that’s it – we’re done.’ You went on to become tremendously successful here at HBO. You’re like the Tom Brady. I think you want the accolades for yourself!” In other words, he was suggesting that Maher is somewhat jealous of Brady for showing up his former NFL team in a revenge act that would outdo Maher’s rebound from ABC’s Politically Incorrect cancelation.

“Everybody who’s been fired from a job goes, ‘Ugh, I’d love to see this guy leave this job,’” Kimmel explained. “They go in the toilet, he goes to Tampa — which is also a toilet, let’s be honest. I lived there, I know. And then he’s in the Super Bowl again and, who knows, he might win it.”

The pair also spoke about Kimmel’s recent opportunity to invest in the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights. Then, Maher again mentioned how many people seem to be wanting to leave California before asking Kimmel to describe a recent road trip he took to Idaho in an RV with his family.

Kimmel admitted after living uncomfortably in a hot tent, he joked: “Did you know tents don’t have air conditioning?”

“Tents?!” Maher replied — the Kimmel fam apparently drove to vacation at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. “They have parking for RVs there!” Kimmel added. “Of course they do,” Maher laughed, before longing for the stand-up comedy nights in Vegas he lost due to the COVID-19.

The pandemic has also forced both late night hosts to perform in front of near-empty studio audiences due to health and safety regulations. The two compared notes on how they’ve coped with the change. Kimmel joked that his writers are tired of listening to him. “We should switch staffs!” he proposed. “It will be like swinging,” he explained, “but for talk shows.”
