Two More Netflix ‘Cheer’ Athletes Charged on Sexual Misconduct With a Minor

Two more cheerleaders who were featured in the Netflix docuseries Cheer were charged this week in separate criminal cases related to sexual misconduct involving minors. These charges surface nearly five months after fellow Cheer star Jerry Harris was charged in federal courts with producing child pornography.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, 25-year-old Robert Joseph Scianna Jr. was arrested Wednesday in Virginia and charged with felony counts of taking indecent liberties with a child and using an electronic communication device to solicit sex, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department.

The investigation described how Scianna met a juvenile male through a social media platform and arranged to meet him for sex. Scianna is currently being held in Chesterfield County Jail without bond.

Mitchell Ryan, 23, of the Navarro College cheer team that was the basis of the Netflix title, was arrested by the Coppell Police Department in Texas on Wednesday. Ryan was charged with aggravated sexual assault against a minor relating to an incident that occurred on July 2020, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. Ryan posted bond on Friday morning and was released… for now.

Neither cheerleader has yet to comment on their respective crimes. Ryan’s lawyer Jeremy Rosenthal told USA Today, “This has been a nightmare for Mitch and his family. We look forward to Dallas County hearing the truth and this case being over.”

In December, Jerry Harris, was charged with seven additional counts of sex crimes involving minors after his initial federal prosecution. An indictment which was made public by the attorneys for two of Harris’ alleged victims stated that Harris was charged with seven counts of child pornography and sex crimes involving multiple victims that alleges misconduct in multiple states, including Illinois, Florida and Texas.

The 21-year-old was originally charged in September with one count of producing child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Illinois and has remained in custody since.

The first season of the docuseries Cheer premiered in January 2020 on Netflix.
