Disney+ Has Nearly 95 Million Subscribers

Disney+ has reached nearly 95 million subscribers, Variety reports. As of Jan. 2, 2021, the streaming service reported 94.9 million customers globally, marking an 8 million subscriber increase in just one month, when it last reported 86.8 million paid subscribers in December.

With the latest numbers, Disney has beat its original projections to secure between 60 and 90 million subscribers within four years. Now, it’s reached that goal in just over a year — the service officially launched in November 2019.

Within the last couple of months, Disney+ debuted multiple popular releases, including the Jamie Foxx Pixar movie Soul, a new season of Star Wars series The Mandalorian, and the recent premiere of the Marvel series WandaVisionAnd the streaming service has plenty more in store this year. At their investor day late last year, Disney announced a whole slew of upcoming releases, including the animated film Raya and the Last Dragon, which will debut on Disney+ this spring with Premier Access, as well as new Star Wars series and more Marvel releases.

When Disney+ revealed their subscriber numbers back in December, CFO Christine McCarthy said the company has re-forecast its goals, and now projects to land between 230 million and 260 million paid subscribers in total by the end of fiscal year 2024. “Needless to say, Disney Plus has exceeded our wildest expectations,” Disney CEO Bob Chapek said at the time. “This success has bolstered our confidence in our continued acceleration toward a DTC-first business model.”

Ever since its launch, Disney+ has continued to attract new subscribers in large numbers, per CNBC. In just its first day, the streaming service counted 10 million sign-ups, and eventually has over 26 million subscribers by the end of its first quarter. During the pandemic, Disney+ saw an increase from 33.5 million subscribers to 57.5 million between its second and third quarter. And in the fourth quarter, Disney+ reported over  73.7 million subscribers, officially smashing its 60-90 million goal.
