Gina Carano Fired From ‘The Mandalorian’ For “Abhorrent and Unacceptable” Social Media Posts

Gina Carano has been fired from The Mandalorian after sharing an Instagram post that equated being a Republican today with being Jewish during the Holocaust.

In a statement issued Wednesday night, Lucasfilm announced that Carano, the actress behind former Rebel Alliance soldier Cara Dune, will not be returning to The Mandalorian or other Star Wars titles in the wake of the controversy. “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” said a Lucasfilm spokesperson. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carano has also been dropped by her agency, UTA, a spokesperson confirmed.

Carano’s firing came hours after social media users launched a viral #FireGinaCarano campaign that highlighted the insensitive post. The actress has since deleted the post, but Twitter users captured screenshots and called upon Disney to take action against The Mandalorian star.

A source tells THR that Carano’s Wednesday Instagram post was “the final straw” for Disney execs, who have been “looking for a reason to fire her for two months.” In November, Carano, a mixed martial artist turned actress, mocked mask-wearing and falsely suggested that voter fraud affected the 2020 election.

Carano has appeared in The Mandalorian since the Disney+ drama’s first season, and she quickly established herself as a fan-favorite character. According to THR, a spinoff series involving Cara Dune was in the works at Lucasfilm, and Disney had planned to announce it during their December investor call, but reversed course in the wake of Carano’s November tweets. Shortly after the controversy, Decider’s Meghan O’Keefe argued that The Mandalorian should replace Gina Carano with Misty Rosas’ Frog Lady, an “iconic” matriarchal figure who “can sprint on all fours.” It’s a valid point.

Decider has reached out to Gina Carano’s representative for comment, but did not hear back by the time of publication.
