New Movies On Demand: ‘Music,’ ‘Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar’ + More

Who’s ready to party this weekend? And by party, I mean spend another 6-12 hours at a time on the couch? This weekend, the streaming gods are offering up several highly anticipated titles, some of which have gained notoriety for reasons beyond the cinema. Whether you use Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s service, you have plenty of places to watch. But where should you start with this week’s batch of new releases? Worry not, we here at Decider will gladly guide you on that journey of what to watch.

Comedy writing partners Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are the pair responsible for Bridesmaids, and they’ve joined forces again to write and co-star in Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar. If you want to catch Sia’s directorial debut, Music, it’s finally here. The film has been controversial for months for reasons we’ll explain below, but with a cast that includes Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Schwartz, Tig Notaro, and Lena Dunham, there has to be something good about it… right? And finally, if your kids have finally grown tired of watching the same things over and over (just kidding, that never happens), The Croods: A New Age, now available to rent, will hopefully break up the monotony in their viewing lives. Adults might appreciate the fact that the film features Cloris Leachman in one of her final roles.

So what are the best movies to watch right now? Check out what’s available to buy or rent this weekend.

Music

Sia has found herself tweeting up a storm with regard to her directorial debut, Music, but not necessarily for all the best reasons. The film has already received two Golden Globe nominations, including one for Best Musical or Comedy, amid loads of backlash regarding the fact that Sia did not use an autistic actor to portray the titular character, Music, as well as the depiction of the use of restraints on autistic people. The story is simple enough: 14-year-old Music, played by Maddie Ziegler, is cared for by her grandmother. When she dies, her half-sister Zu (Kate Hudson, who received the film’s second Golden Globe nod, for Best Supporting Actress), a drug addict, is given custody. (But who’s really caring for whom? etc., etc… Lessons are learned by everyone in this film.)

Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar

Wiig and Mumolo taught all of Hollywood a lesson when they made Bridesmaids in 2011: Women are funny, and they can carry an entire film. (Hint: None of this should have been a surprise, but in 2011, it somehow was.) The pair return as the titular Barb and Star, who embark on a trip together where they encounter romance, adventure, and a lot of killer cameos from comedy friends like Vanessa Bayer and Damon Wayans Jr.
