New Movies On Demand: ‘Minari,’ ‘The Obituary of Tunde Johnson’ + More

There’s no shortage of emotional dramas available this week on VOD. This week, whether you’re browsing Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play, or your cable’s service, are all offering some highly anticipated dramatic fare, from Lee Isaac Chung’s autobiographical Minari to The Obituary of Tunde Johnson, about the murder of a Black teen at the hands of police. Decider has rounded up all the best movies that are out this week, and while they’re not all emotional gut-punches, there are certainly more than a few that will make you feel big feelings. Allow us to advise on what to watch this weekend.

Minari, a film by Lee Isaac Chung, finally comes out this week and is well worth a view. The film, about a Korean family who moves to Kansas in the 1980s, contains over 50% of Korean dialogue, and has (controversially) been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign-Language Film, but not Best Picture, owing to the HFPA’s archaic rules about foreign language films being ineligible for Best Picture. And The Obituary of Tunde Johnson is a devastating look at the effects of systemic racism in our country, scripted by Nigerian-born screenwriter Stanley Kalu.

Another option, if you can handle another good cry, is Mallory, a documentary about 12-year-old Mallory Grossman, who took her life as a result of being bullied. The film depicts not just Mallory’s life but the organization her family has started in her honor.

So what are the best movies to watch right now? Check out what’s available to buy or rent this weekend.

Minari

Minari has already won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, and will likely be the talk of award season this year. The story is autobiographical, writer-director Lee Isaac Chung grew up the son of Korean immigrants who moved to the Ozarks in the 1980s in an effort to start a farm. The story is one of family, assimilation, and identity, and has already garnered critical acclaim for its portrayal of a family embarking on a new phase of their lives.

The Obituary of Tunde Johnson

Tunde Johnson (Steven Silver) is a Black teenager who was brought up to understand that his life is more important than his pride. His parents have taught him to comply with police, don’t talk back, don’t defy. Adding to that, he’s struggling to deal with being gay and being targeted at school. The narrative structure is a little bit Palm Springs, where he awakens in a time loop to confront his life and his murder over and over.
