10 Shows to Watch If You Love 'Gilmore Girls'
Ginny & Georgia is a certifiable hit. The second season just debuted on Netflix, and has been dominating the streamers rankings, showing that the people want more Ginny AND more Georgia.
Over the past two seasons, audiences have gotten to know, love, and groan at young (hot) mom, Georgia (Brianne Howey), who relocated to a plush New England suburb after the death of her loaded ex-husband. The show focuses primarily on her relationship with her precocious 15-year-old daughter, Ginny (Antonia Gentry), in a Palladino-esque take on the often tenuous interplay between young moms and their ambitious daughters. One that also involves a ton of murder.
Desperately waiting for a Ginny & Georgia Season 3? In the meantime, here are some shows to add to your watchlist that might cure your cravings for more “mommy problems” content.
'Gilmore Girls'

This comparison was made before Ginny & Georgia even premiered on Netflix. The show acknowledged the resemblance between the new mother-daughter gem and its iconic early 2000s inspiration, Gilmore Girls, in the first moments of the pilot. Georgia attempts to cajole her teenage daughter out of a sour mood by joking, “we’re like the Gilmore Girls, but with bigger boobs.” In an interview with Decider, Ginny & Georgia star, Brianne Howey , says the comparison is “incredibly flattering,” but points out that the subject matter is significantly darker in the their spin on the fraught and fabulous mother-daughter relationship. That may be true, but both shows (at least briefly) feel like a welcome, maternal New England hug.
'Firefly Lane'

Firefly Lane is another champion of female friendship, motherhood, and the good old flashback. The show follows two lifelong friends, Tully and Kate, as they navigate their disparate 70s upbringings and present-day success, or lack thereof. Tully is an A-list talkshow host who is struggling with relationships, while Kate is attempting to break back into the workforce sans Tully’s help and cope with divorce. Like Ginny & Georgia, it encapsulates the pangs of adolescence and proves that angsty teen hood isn’t something you ever really grow out of.
'Little Fires Everywhere'

If you’re a fan of mother-daughter drama, perfectly cast “mini-mes,” Reese Witherspoon’s book club, and/or what Claire Spellberg has termed “fancy garbage,” Little Fires Everywhere must be your next binge. Like Ginny & Georgia, it is similarly dark and twisty, jumping around in time incessantly until the truth is revealed. In this show, the big questions are, “who burned down Reese Witherspoon’s house?” and “was it Kerry Washington?” Juicy questions with even juicier answers. The show, which is based on the Celeste Ng novel of the same name, also has a surprise ending that left fans of the book reeling.
'Pretty Little Liars'

Another popular mystery book turned hit TV series is Pretty Little Liars. The show revolves around the aftermath of the disappearance of queen bee clique leader, Alison DiLaurentis. It is later discovered that Alison was in fact murdered, and the Liars have been keeping more than a few secrets. Alison’s former friend group must not only grapple with the traumatic loss of their friend, but harassment from mysterious texter, “A,” whose identity becomes the focus of the show’s seven seasons.
'Euphoria'

The final show that needs to be on your watchlist if you love a complex teenage narrative is Euphoria. The hit HBO Max series stars Zendaya as Rue, who has just returned from rehab when the pilot commences. Her performance in Euphoria won her an Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series last year and has been met with a combination of critical acclaim and parental disdain. The show grapples with mature themes like drug addiction and sexual abuse, along with identity and trauma. However, if you’re up for the intense subject matter, it’s a groundbreaking piece of television that shouldn’t be missed.
