Trevor Noah Blasts the Golden Globes: “The Proud Boys Have More Black Members” Than the HFPA

Trevor Noah is finally wading in to the controversy surrounding the 2021 Golden Globes. On Monday The Daily Show host absolutely eviscerated the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Globes’ voting body, for its half-hearted attempt to address its lack of diversity during the Sunday night broadcast. “You know you’ve got representation problems when the Proud Boys have more Black members than you,” said Noah. Yikes.

After an overall blah night at the Golden Globes, Noah had just one thing to discuss come Monday: a recent Los Angeles Times investigation that reported that the 87-person HFPA has no Black members. Released just one week before the Globes, the LA Times report cast a damning shadow over the event, and it ultimately became the largest talking point of the evening. Shortly after host Tina Fey dragged the “90 international no-Black journalists” that make up the HFPA, three voting members appeared on stage to apologize.

“Just like in film and television, Black representation is vital. We must have Black journalists in our organization,” said Helen Hoehne. “We must also ensure everyone, from all representative communities, gets a seat at our table, and we’re going to make that happen,” added past president Meher Tatina.

Of course, the group stopped short of announcing any concrete steps to achieve their goal of a “more inclusive future” — a fact that was not lost on Noah. “The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was being roasted all night by the hosts, by the presenters, even by themselves. So, the good news is, you know they’re going to fix the problem,” said The Daily Show host. “Because can you imagine them coming back next year and being like, ‘We are still working on finding a single Black person, if anyone out there knows a single Black person, give us their number.'”

However, the 2021 Golden Globes weren’t all bad. “Aside from the no-Black-people controversy, I’m not going to lie, I did enjoy getting to see inside all of these celebrities’ homes. And hands down, my favorite house was Jeff Daniels’,” said Noah. “I don’t know if you noticed this, but there are like five doors in that room. And think about this: we’re only seeing one and a half walls. There could easily be 10 to 20 more doors!”

“Some celebrities spend their money on fancy cars or jewelry. Jeff Daniels spends his money on doors,” he concluded. “I respect the hell out of that.”

Maybe the HFPA could find a Black journalist behind one of Jeff Daniels’ doors? Just a thought.
