Paramount+: 9 Best Shows to Watch, from ‘Survivor’ to ‘The Real World Homecoming: New York’

Paramount+ officially launched today, bringing a “mountain of entertainment” to audiences from the comfort of their own home. The streaming service formerly known as “CBS All Access” will bring a treasure trove of new, classic, and original programming to folks hungry for more TV. Paramount+ is now live with must-see originals like Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years and The Real World Homecoming: New York, as well as library hits like Star Trek: Discovery, Survivor, Young Sheldon, and the entire breadth of CBS News titles.

If you’re new to Paramount+ — heh, we all are — it might be a little overwhelming trying to sift through the platform’s impressive catalogue of CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon classics. The streaming service has everything from the likes of Avatar: The Last Airbender to RuPaul’s Drag Race, not to mention CBS hits like NCIS, Seal Team, and Hawaii: Five-O. There are things for the kids in your family, like Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig, and for the classic TV fans, like I Love Lucy and the original Star Trek. But where should you start? And what Paramount+ shows absolutely can’t be missed?

Here are the nine best shows to watch on the new streaming platform, Paramount+. From groundbreaking comedies to addictive reality shows and brand new originals, these are Paramount+’s must-see shows.

1

'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

The biggest Netflix show of Summer 2020 actually isn’t a Netflix show. Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and a slate of upcoming spinoffs all call Paramount+ home. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a brilliant animated series following Aang, his generation’s Avatar, aka the only person with the power to harness all four elements. After being encased in ice for 100 years, Aang wakes up to a world ruined by war and waiting for the Avatar to restore balance. Avatar: The Last Airbender might sound like kids’ fare, but it’s the perfect show for everyone to watch. Why? Because it’s literally perfect.

'The Good Fight'

The Good Fight might have the honor of being the first CBS All Access original program, but it’s still one of the best. Initially positioned as a Good Wife spin-off following Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski), The Good Fight has since become one of the most creative, audacious, and brilliant shows in all of television. It’s still a crime that it’s overlooked by the major award shows. To quote SuperYaki: “Nominate Delroy Lindo, you cowards!

'Star Trek Discovery'

If any part of yourself identifies as a Trekkie, you’ve got to have a Paramount+ subscription. The service isn’t just the home of the classic series, but new hits like Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks. However the best current Star Trek installment has to be Star Trek: Discovery. Set in the years preceding the original Star Trek, the show follows Spock’s adopted sister Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) as she finds herself embroiled in a fierce war with the Klingons. The series is a high-octane, super nerdy, and incredibly fun take on Star Trek.

'RuPaul’s Drag Race'

RuPaul’s Drag Race is one of the most influential reality show competitions of the 21st century and that’s because it’s so damn fun. Since 2009, RuPaul, BFF Michelle Visage, and a rotating panel of celebrity judges have put America’s drag queens through the wringer. But we don’t tune in for the famous faces. We watch for the queens. A mix of Project Runway, Glow Up, and America’s Next Top Model, RuPaul’s Drag Race juggles genres and inspires profound cultural shifts. And the first 10 seasons are streaming on Paramount+.

'Chappelle’s Show'

There is perhaps no sketch show as influential to modern sketch comedy than Chappelle’s Show. Sure SNL is the institution, but Dave Chappelle is the pioneer. His Comedy Central show set a new gold standard for what comedy could be, inspiring the likes of Key & Peele, Amy Schumer, Desus & Mero, and a whole generation of talent. Chappelle Show is arguably the centerpiece of Paramount+’s comedy library, which includes a vast wealth of Comedy Central classics.

'The Real World Homecoming: New York'

Sure, it’s the original reality show (not counting the 1970s series The Family). It’s a pop culture juggernaut that has yet to be surpassed. There are a lot of reasons to watch The Real World on Paramount+, but the most important one is the fact that the streaming service is reuniting the very first cast in The Real World Homecoming: New York. The Real World has always been a soapy social experiment, but it’s also now the closest thing the United States has to Michael Apted’s Up series. It’s a time capsule of our lives, full of tragedy, melodrama, steamy hookups, and one villain named Puck.

'Survivor'

Survivor is one of the most famous shows in CBS history. Debuting in 2000 and still a ratings hit, the series set off a nation-wide obsession with reality competitions and inspired legions of imitators. Nevertheless Survivor remains the O.G. reality show competition. The old seasons are good. The new seasons are good. This show? This show is good.

'Kamp Koral'

One thing that might be flying under the radar is the fact that Paramount+ has the most robust library of kids’ content next to Disney+. All of Nickelodeon’s classics are on there, as well as Paw Patrol and the upcoming I, Carly reboot. Launching with Paramount+ on day one? The SpongeBob SquarePants prequel, Kamp Koral. The show follows SpongeBob, Patrick, and all their pals in the heady days of their childhood. Under the sea, of course.

'60 Minutes'

What’s that, you say? 60 Minutes is boring? The number one news magazine in the nation? The place the President of the United States goes to get grilled? The show that digs into foreign and domestic stories with equal gusto? THE PROGRAM WHERE ANDERSON COOPER INTERVIEWED STORMY DANIELS?!? THAT is boring to you? But real talk, CBS News remains one of the better legacy news brands out there. Paramount+ will give you access to all of CBS’s reporting and 60 Minutes is the place to start.
