7 Shows Like ‘This Is Us’ to Watch Between New Episodes Every Week

This Is Us, NBC’s hit drama about the Pearson family, is now in its fifth season on the network and still going strong since its 2016 premiere. Each week, we tune in to find out what Kate (Chrissy Metz), Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin (Justin Hartley) are up to, and this season has given us plenty to pay attention to, between Kevin’s new babies and Randall’s revelations about his birth mother.

As gripping as this season has been, we’ve also had to wait a little while between episodes. Earlier this season, we had to wait between November and January for new episodes. And now, fans have been hanging on since February for a new episode of This Is Us, since we were left hanging with Episode 9, “The Ride.” Thankfully, we’re set to finally get the latest installment in Season 5, but it won’t come until Tuesday, March 16.

Normally, there’s at least a week between every new This Is Us episode, so how could you possibly pass the time? Turns out, we’ve got a few ideas. Looking for more family drama while waiting to see the latest from the Pearsons? Here are seven shows like This Is Us to watch while you wait for new episodes.

The 2017 reimagining of One Day at a Time brings back the classic Norman Lear sitcom for a new audience. Lighter than This Is Us but not at all afraid to tackle weighty topics, One Day at a Time follows newly-single Penelope (Justina Machado) and her family, which includes her two tween kids (Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz) and her mom, Lydia (Rita Moreno). While One Day at a Time came to an end last year, there are three full seasons of the show now streaming on Netflix.

Before This Is Us became a phenomenon on NBC, there was Friday Night Lights, the popular sports drama about a small Texas town and its beloved football team, the Dillon Panthers. If This Is Us is getting a little too teary for your taste, turn to Modern Family for a lighthearted break in between episodes. The award-winning comedy is a documentary-style look at the Dunphy family and their relatives, who all make up a big, unconventional family. Through life changes, adoptions, marriages and more, the Dunphys show it all in their sweet, funny style. Modern Family ran for over a decade on ABC, so there’s plenty to catch up on if you never watched the hit sitcom.

'Firefly Lane'

Netflix’s Firefly Lane swaps the family drama premise for a soapy series about two friends. Based on the Kirstin Hannah book of the same name, Firefly Lane follows Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) through the decades, from their tween years to their 40s. The drama shows the inseparable duo as they go through the best and worst times of their lives, but through it all, they always have each other by their side.
