HBO’s ‘Tina’ Trailer Charts the Rise of a Music Icon

HBO is rolling out an inspiring first trailer for its upcoming Tina Turner documentary, Tina. In a first look at the film released today, directors Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin share a glimpse into the iconic singer’s life, career, and unconventional path to success and stardom.

Using never-before-seen footage, interviews with Turner and those close to her, and photos, audio and more from her life, Tina explores what the famously private singer has kept mostly hidden from the public eye for decades. Described as “a revealing and intimate look at the life and career of musical icon Tina Turner” and an “unvarnished, dynamic account,” Tina looks back on Turner’s abusive marriage to her then-husband Ike and her solo career that followed after the two divorced.

“I had an abusive life,” Turner says in today’s trailer. “There’s no other way to tell the story.” While she says she “got nothing” in the divorce, she made the most out of what she did have to claim as her own: “No money, no house. So I said, I’ll just take my name.”

And so began the career of the Tina Turner we know today, the woman behind hits like “The Best” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” While the launch of her solo career came with plenty of struggles, her tireless work paid off at age 44, when her album “Private Dancer” topped the charts and sold millions of copies.

Along with commentary from Turner herself, Tina also features interviews with Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, journalist Kurt Loder, playwright and P-Valley creator Katori Hall, and Turner’s husband, Erwin Bach. While Turner has been the subject of a 1986 autobiography and a 1993 film, What’s Love Got to Do With It, HBO’s Tina marks the very first authorized documentary film about the singer.

Tina premieres Saturday, March 27 at 8/7c on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
