Prince William Issues First Statement on Harry and Meghan Interview: “We Are Very Much Not a Racist Family”

Prince William has spoken out for the first time following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, William refuted the allegations of racism levied by the royal couple and said that he has not spoken to his brother since the interview aired earlier this week.

“We are very much not a racist family,” said William, when asked about Markle’s claim that a member of the royal family asked “how dark” she and Harry’s son, Archie, would be. The royals declined to identify who made the remark, as it would be “very damaging” to that person, but they later clarified that it was not Queen Elizabeth II or Prince Philip.

William, currently second in line to the throne, was also asked if he had spoken to his brother in the wake of the interview, which has sent shockwaves throughout the British commonwealth. “I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I will do,” he told reporters.

The future king’s response seems to support Prince Harry’s characterization of their relationship. During the Oprah interview, Harry said that he and William are currently taking “space” away from one another following his decision to step back from royal duties. “I love him to bits, we’ve been through hell together, we had a shared experience, but we’re on different paths,” Harry told Oprah. “The relationship is spaced at the moment. And, you know, time heals all things, hopefully.”

William’s Thursday visit to an East London school served as his first public appearance since CBS aired the primetime Oprah with Meghan and Harry special on Sunday night (the two-hour interview aired in the UK the following evening). The official visit came two days after Buckingham Palace released a brief statement regarding Harry and Meghan’s interview on behalf of the Queen.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” read the statement. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
