Disney Sends ‘Cruella’ and ‘Luca’ to Disney+, Shifts Theatrical Release Dates

Summer may be just around the corner, but Disney isn’t betting on a swift return to normal just yet. The company announced today that some of its biggest upcoming film releases would be heading to streaming on Disney+ in the coming months, including Cruella, Luca and Black Widow

Disney plans to release both Cruella and Black Widow both in theaters and on Disney+, setting a May 28 release date for Cruella and a July 9 release for Black Widow. Both films will be available to watch in theaters and on Disney+ on the same day, but viewers will have to pay a $30 Premier Access fee on top of their streaming subscription to watch either movie.

While both Cruella and Black Widow will be hitting theaters, Disney is saving Luca for an exclusive Disney+ premier. The Italy-set Pixar film will debut on Disney+ June 18, where viewers will not have to pay an extra fee to watch.

“Today’s announcement reflects our focus on providing consumer choice and serving the evolving preferences of audiences,” said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution. “By leveraging a flexible distribution strategy in a dynamic marketplace that is beginning to recover from the global pandemic, we will continue to employ the best options to deliver The Walt Disney Company’s unparalleled storytelling to fans and families around the world.”

Disney’s announcement comes after a year of unprecedented change in the film industry, with multiple blockbusters either heading straight to streaming or splitting a release between theaters and home audiences. Disney has previously released big titles like their  Mulan live-action remake, Pixar’s Soul, and more recently, Raya and the Last Dragon, on Disney+.

Along with new streaming release plans for some of its upcoming films, Disney also revealed a shifted schedule for upcoming theatrical premieres. The company set new release dates for Free Guy (Aug. 13, 2021), Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Sept. 3, 2021), The King’s Man (Dec. 22, 2021), Deep Water (Jan. 14, 2022), and Death on the Nile (Feb. 11, 2022).
