You’ve finished watching Godzilla Vs. Kong on HBO Max (or maybe in a movie theater!), you’re reeling from those epic fight scenes, and you’re jamming along to The Hollies’s “The Air That I Breathe” while you wait to see if there is a Godzilla Vs. Kong after-credits scene. (There is not.) And now you’re wondering: “When is the next Godzilla movie coming out?” Or maybe you’re thinking: “Give me that King Kong sequel!” Or perhaps even: “What other MonsterVerse movies does Legendary have planned?”

Those who watched the movie to the end know that (spoiler alert!) both Godzilla and King Kong survive, after working together to defeat Mechagodzilla. Godzilla swims off into the ocean, as he always does, but King Kong is returned to “Hollow Earth.” Hollow Earth, we learn in the film, is an underground world where titans live, much like Skull Island. It’s hinted that King Kong may find more of his kind there, perhaps in a future movie.

But will there be a future movie? Here’s what we know about a Godzilla Vs. Kong sequel, and the future of Godzilla and King Kong movies.

What is the next Godzilla movie? Will there be a Godzilla Vs. Kong sequel?

While a Godzilla Vs. Kong sequel is not entirely off of the table, there is not currently another Godzilla movie in the works from Legendary. The studio had a deal with TOHO, the Japanese company that has been developing Godzilla movies for the last half a century, but that deal expired in 2020.

When asked about the future of the Godzilla films one year ago, TOHO’s Head of Project Development Akito Takahashi said, “There might be something coming out from Japan, there might be something from the United States, there might be a collaboration, we’re unsure. We’re excited to know as well.”

Last month, Godzilla Vs. Kong director Adam Wingard said in an interview with Collider that he would like to continue the story, but that the matter is out of his hands. “I’d love it to be the birth of something new, but I guess it just depends on just how the movie’s received and all those kinds of things that are out of my hands.”

In other words: We don’t know yet! It seems like that there will be more Godzilla movies in some form, but whether they will be in the same universe as Godzilla Vs. Kong is less clear.

Will the MonsterVerse continue? Are there MonsterVerse upcoming movies?

In that same interview with Collider, Wingard said, “I know where we could go potentially with future films, but to a certain degree, the MonsterVerse was kind of created with the idea in mind that there was going to be always a… You know, these films were leading towards Godzilla versus Kong.”

That said, though the original plan was to conclude the Legendary MonsterVerse with Godzilla Vs. Kong, it’s possible that a new deal with TOHO could be reached depending on how well the film does. It’s hard to say how the film will do at the box office—more people may feel comfortable going to the movie theaters, as more people get vaccinated, but on the other hand, the film is streaming on HBO Max for anyone who wants to watch it at home. (Legendary was not happy about the Warner Bros. decision to release the film on streaming.)

We’ll just have to wait and see.
