Netflix’s Who Killed Sara? has been trending on the streamer’s Top 10 list since its premiere last week, but even those of us who have binged the whole first season are still left wondering, well… Who killed Sara?
Hopefully we’ll get some answers when season two, which has already been greenlit, premieres, although that’s still a a few months away from now. The show revolves around the death of the young and beautiful Sara, who appeared to have been killed during a parasailing accident while boating with her brother and their friends. Her brother, Alex, is convicted of her murder, spends 18 years in prison for it, and when he gets out, he is hell-bent on finding the true killer and getting revenge.
The Mexican thriller-meets-telenovela takes a cue from many other shows that are fueled by intense family drama and a murder mystery, and we’ve got a few suggestions for shows like Who Killed Sara? to tide you over until season two.
Twin Peaks
Who killed Laura Palmer?
Twin Peaks was landmark television when it premiered on ABC in 1990. Created by Mark Frost and David Lynch, the series ran for two seasons on ABC, and was resurrected in 2017 for a limited run on Showtime. The town of Twin Peaks, Washington is thrown into chaos when beautiful high school student Laura Palmer is found dead, her body found wrapped in plastic by the side of a river. FBI Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle McLachlan) is brought in to investigate, but what he and the audience find is a surreal, noir mystery the likes of which had never been seen on prime time.
Broadchurch
Who killed Danny Latimer?
11 year old Danny Latimer dies in the fictional beach town of Broadchurch. Investigators Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) team up to find the killer, and everyone, including Danny’s father Mark, is a suspect. Season one of Broadchurch (or should we say, series one) is one of the most suspenseful, riveting seasons of TV out there, and the ending is a gut-punch. (Seasons two and three, ehhh… not so much? Although season two does feature Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a sexy lawyer so there’s that.)
Lupin
Who framed Assane's dad?
Netflix’s Lupin is based on the tales of Arséne Lupin, the master of disguise and gentleman thief created by author Maurice LeBlanc. The series updates the Lupin franchise a bit by bringing the mysteries into the present, with Omar Sy playing Assane Diop, a man inspired by the Lupin books. When Diop was a teenager, his father was framed for a jewel theft he didn’t commit and kills himself in jail. Two decades later, Diop, referencing the books about Lupin and using notes left behind by his father, seeks revenge on the man who framed his father.
Ginny & Georgia
Will everyone else find out who killed Georgia's husband?
Tonally, Ginny & Georgia is not as dark or murky as some of our other recommendations, but if you like to keep your shows about secret murderers light and peppy, this is the one for you. Georgia is a single mom who moves her children to a small, idyllic town in Massachusetts after the death of her husband, but as it turns out, she’s the one who killed him. It’s Gilmore Girls meets Riverdale, and the mystery element is definitely satisfying.

A dead 18-year-old girl is found dead in a ravine. When the prosecutor on the case, Elena Guerra (Vittoria Puccini) begins her investigation, it turns out that she is actually – TWIST! – the dead girl’s birth mother. And that’s just episode one!
The Killing
Who killed Rosie Larsen?
Just like in Who Killed Sara?, the very essence of The Killing was setting us up to figure out who killed Rosie Larsen. And by the end of season one, we still, infuriatingly, wouldn’t find out. The AMC mystery show was indeed a slow burn, but so well done that the fact that they forced us to wait until season two was, ulitmately, forgivable because when we learned the truth, we just didn’t see it coming.
The Gloaming
Who killed the unidentified woman?
The Gloaming is an Australian series featuring a dead girl at the bottom of a waterfall. (Rivers, ravines, and waterfalls: Steer clear, ladies!) But in addition to being a whodunit, The Gloaming adds a sense of the supernatural, with the main cast of characters being haunted by “gloamings,” or ghosts from the past.
