Godzilla vs. Kong is making a monstrous footprint in its first week. The new Warner Bros. film, which premiered both in theaters and on HBO Max March 31, broke at-home streaming records, according to a new study from Samba TV. In the first five days of its release, 3.6 million U.S. households watched at least five minutes of Godzilla vs. Kong on Samba TV, the company revealed today.
The new numbers were collected between March 31, the day Godzilla vs. Kong dropped in theaters and on streaming, and April 4. Samba’s analysis also looked at U.K. households, where 225,000 viewers tuned in to the movie for at least five minutes. Both the U.S. and U.K. saw the the biggest single-day numbers during the opening day of the film.
The viewership numbers for Godzilla vs. Kong as reported by Samba have topped all other Warner Bros. releases so far, but the monster epic also had a slightly different release schedule than past films, debuting on a Wednesday. Other numbers collected by Samba for HBO Max releases on 3-day weekends are as follows:
Wonder Woman 1984 – 2.2 million (12/25-12/27)
Snyder Cut – 1.8 million (3/18-3/21)
The Little Things – 1.4 million (1/29-1/31)
Tom & Jerry – 1.2 million (2/26-2/28)
Judas and the Black Messiah – 653,000 (2/12-2/15)
The film also beat out non-Warner Bros. movies, like Disney+’s Soul, which saw 2.4 million viewers on Samba TV in its Dec. 25-Dec. 27 opening weekend.
Godzilla vs. Kong was a hit at home, but it also saw an impressive turnout in the box office, pulling in a “pandemic best,” according to CNBC. The long-awaited film brought in over $30 million just at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, suggesting a brighter future for theaters than previously predicted.
Warner Bros. released Godzilla vs. Kong last month after delaying the film, which was originally scheduled to premiere in November 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Adam Wingard movie marks the fourth film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, and also serves as a sequel to both 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island.
