Katharine McPhee Duets With Willie Spence in Moving ‘American Idol’ Moment

Katharine McPhee returned to her roots on the latest episode of American IdolThe actress and singer, who has gone on to star in Smash and perform on Broadway, had her first big break as a contestant on the hit reality show in 2006, and made it back to the famous stage during last night’s episode, ET Canada reports.

McPhee joined frontrunner Willie Spence for a performance of Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion’s “The Prayer,” wowing the judges with their moving duet. Spence dedicated the 1999 hit to his grandfather, who had recently died, while McPhee dedicated the song to her late father. Although the night was packed with performances, their emotional moment onstage seemed to particularly stun judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

“You can do no wrong in my eyes,” Bryan said at the end of the performance. “Part of being a star is making people fall in love with you and, man, I am in love with you, and I am in love with the way you go about being on stage, and the way you go about singing and the place it comes from. It’s amazing.”

Richie, who joked Spence was “Willie Pavarotti,” said it was “mesmerizing” to watch the performance. And McPhee had plenty of praise for her partner too, saying backstage that Spence put his own twist on the iconic song. “He made ‘The Prayer,’ something that Andrea Bocelli sings, sound like something that Willie would sing,” she said.

Aside from her duet with Spence, McPhee also performed with competitor Alyssa Wray, teaming up with the singer for a performance of Whitney Houston’s “I’m Your Baby Tonight.”

McPhee, who was the runner-up on her season of American Idol, lost to Taylor Hicks but went on to find plenty of success outside of the singing competition. She’s appeared in films and TV shows like The House Bunny, Community, Ugly Betty, and Family Guy. Right now, you can see her in Netflix’s new TV comedy, Country Comfort, which she stars in alongside Eddie Cibrian.

American Idol airs Sunday and Monday nights at 8/7c on ABC. Watch McPhee’s full performance in the video above.
