Netflix has signed a ground-breaking deal with Sony Pictures that sends the studio’s 2022 films straight to the streaming platform after their theatrical release, Deadline reports. Under the new, multi-year deal, films like Uncharted, Morbius, Bullet Train and Where the Crawdads Sing will stream on Netflix after they hit theaters.

The agreement marks a split from Starz, where Sony had sent its films after theaters beginning in 2005. Now, Sony movies will have an 18-month exclusivity window on Netflix, giving the streamer first pay window rights to the studio’s titles after theatrical and VOD windows. Although specific numbers were not revealed, the deal is rumored to be in the $1 billion range.

Starting next year, Netflix subscribers will have access to Sony releases at home post-PVOD, including titles from Sony’s Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, Screen Gems, and TriStar Pictures. Along with the films listed above, Netflix will be home to upcoming sequels to Venom, Jumanji, Bad Boys, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The new deal also gives Netflix a first-look for any direct-to-streaming titles from Sony, and the streamer has committed to “a number” of the titles already. In addition to Sony’s straight-to-streaming titles, Netflix plans to license older movies from Sony, as well.

“At Sony Pictures, we produce some of the biggest blockbusters and the most creative, original films in the industry,” said Keith Le Goy, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution. “This exciting agreement further demonstrates the importance of that content to our distribution partners as they grow their audiences and deliver the very best in entertainment.”

Netflix film chief Scott Stuber added, “This not only allows us to bring their impressive slate of beloved film franchises and new IP to Netflix in the U.S., but it also establishes a new source of first-run films for Netflix movie lovers worldwide.”
