Get Ready For ‘Younger’ Season 7 By Rewatching Each Character’s Best Episode

Darren Star gave the world Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, and Sex and The City. For those achievements alone, Dayenu. But Star has kept on shining and forever staying relevant with the times. Younger, his primary focus over the last 6 years, is now entering its 7th and final season and completes his Mount Rushmore of shows. And, in some respects, this show — one that revolves around a middle-aged woman pretending to be… younger in order to re-enter the workforce — is his most enjoyable show to date. Bad things happen to good people, but Star’s good people are so lovable that you root real hard for every single one of them to succeed in life and in love.

There’s Liza (Sutton Foster), the age liar, who falls for a younger man, and then for an older man who’s more her age, ‘cept he thinks she’s… younger. Have them all – you go, girl!

There’s Charles (Peter Hermann), Liza’s boss, the dashing publisher whose wife left him, leaving him vulnerable and ready to take chances in both business and in bed. You go, Chaz!

There’s Josh (Nico Tortorella), the hot young tattoo artist with washboard abs, who can also play the washboard, who Liza initially falls for. He has a heart of gold, but Liza may make it turn black, as black as the ink that flows in his day job.

This is one love triangle that is as equally frustrating as it is embraceable from all three sides. Luckily they’re surrounded by the greatest and whip-smart support system going in Kelsey, Diana, Maggie, Zane, Lauren and Caitlin.

Before we hear “Million Dollar Life” play over the end credits for the final time 😢, let us salute each of these amazing characters by spotlighting their best individual episodes to date.

1

Liza Miller (Sutton Foster)

"Younger" Ep. 606 (Airs 7/24/19)
Photo: TVLand

EPISODE: “Merger, She Wrote” (Season 6, Episode 6)

Microdosing on “not LSD” at a retreat in the woods — with Liza, Charles AND Josh. What could possibly go wrong? More like – what amazingness WILL become of it? MUCH!!! Liza is a ball of wonder, and even more wonderful when under the influence. She got loopy with Manischewitz & Molly in Season 1 [see Lauren’s “Hot Mitzvah” below], got starry-eyed surprised with a pot lollipop in Season 2, and in Season 6? She goes off the rails and gives ‘em the old razzle dazzle.

How our love triangle gets to the retreat isn’t important. What’s important is that they’re all there together and the drugs are wreaking havoc on Liza’s love strings, blurring the lines (and bodies) of Charles and Josh. Does she still have the hots for Josh? Can sober sister Nurse Maureen convince her that loving two men is better than one? Questions that are all beyond our pay grade. What happens next is one of the most magical sequences of all of Younger – actress Sutton Foster struts her Broadway bona fides, and elegantly dances with the tuxed-up and dashing Chaz and Josh, and there’s nothing but smiles to go round. Back in reality, she’s out of her gourd imagining this delusion, and actually dancing with a potted plant, as Charles and Josh look on and laugh at her together. What a beautiful sight. Maybe nurse Maureen was on to something. Hmm 🤔

Charles Brooks (Peter Hermann)

CHARLES YOUNGER A BOOK FAIR TO REMEMBER
Photo: TV Land

EPISODE: “A Book Fair to Remember” (Season 3 – Episode 11)

The gang escapes the city for the more casual confines of the Hamptons for a book fair. Liza and Charles take turns exchanging awkward smiles and odd pleasantries, like she being happy to finally see his knees, since, in a rare instance, he is wearing shorts. And for him, it’s Liza’s breakfast choice of a danish that gets him dishing out compliments.

Later they head out for the evening, and Charles is remarkably letting his guard down, sharing tidbits of his past like being an ice cream scooper and sneaking into the club across the street… where the band Berlin happens to be playing this very night. That happens to be one of Liza’s favorite bands (um, her “babysitter” turned them on to her when she was even “younger”), and fate now has a date, as the two head to the concert.

The sweet tunes are taking the awkward out of their smiles, leaving them with just the widest grins you ever did see. Then Berlin break out their biggest hit, the love ballad made popular in Top Gun, “Take My Breath Away,” and wouldn’t you know it, Liza and Charles have their respective breaths taken away, slow dance, Charles udders, “I like you,” and the two share a magical kiss like it was prom night 1986. SWOON!! It’s too good to be true!

You can sense the moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally come, but before they part ways for the night back at the hotel, they embrace again, and Liza tells him that she still needs to figure out things with Josh. Charles agrees, as he points to what’s behind her – a proposal by Josh written on the bed in rose petals, spelling out “Marry Me.” To make matters worse, Josh was watching all along, just like we were. Two hearts beat as one, while a third is shattered!! SMH 🤦‍♀️ 💔

Kelsey Peters (Hilary Duff)

YOUNGER KELSEY
Photo: TV Land

EPISODE: “It’s All About The Money, Honey” (Season 6, Episode 10)

Kelsey has always been so boss, but now she is the boss, and heads to Chicago with Charles on a last ditch effort to nab investors to get Millenial “back in black.” Despite the money men’s reservations about Kelsey being a young upstart lady, she woos the board and, in turn, impresses Charles. The two celebrate on the probable deal, and before passing out for the evening, Kelsey sends a racy DM (this isn’t your daughter’s Hilary Duff) to Zane, “guess who got the money honey,” except it didn’t go to Zane, it went straight to her Instagram story!!! OH, THE HORROR!!!

Instantly her feed is blowing up, while winding down in dreamland. When she wakes up, she’s flooded with such kind words as “Nippy longstockings” and “A tale of two titties,” and now in need of some immediate damage control after becoming an insta-meme. The board is still on board with funding Millennial, but on the caveat that she steps aside and the more serious adult Charles takes over. Charles defends her, but she goes for it anyway, as it’s what’s best for the business. She returns to New York broken into pieces. It’s a rare downer of an episode for Kelsey, but it won’t be long before she picks up those pieces and pieces it all back together. Stand tall, girl! 💰 🦸‍♀️

Josh (Nico Tortorella)

JOSH YOUNGER THE INCIDENT AT POUND RIDGE
Photo: TV Land

EPISODE: “The Incident At Pound Ridge” (Season 4, Episode 9)

Our hearts cry for poor Josh (Nico Torterella). He fell for Liza hard, and even after he discovered her age secret, and stuck with her (because that’s what you do when you find true love). He was so close to proposing when he caught Liza and Charles smooching, sending his life into a tailspin. Luckily he’s recovered nicely and met a beautiful Irish barmaid named Clare (Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynevor) to drown his sorrows on.

In this episode, they go on their first date, try crazy hot jalapeños, and after she gets handsy in his panties, his dick is on fire. Luckily a cold tub of yogurt saves his junk. The following day, the two attend a picnic at Charles’ house, where Josh has to play nice in order to land that adult coloring book gig lined up for him. After a potato sack race collision between Liza’s two paramours, Josh is done playing nice and lands a punch on Charles, knocking him the f#%k out. He’s told that punch cost him his $10k book deal, and Josh says it was totally worth it. It totally was. 🥊

5

Diana Trout (Miriam Shor)

DIANA YOUNGER INTO THE WOODS
Photo: TV Land

EPISODE: “Into The Woods & Out of The Woods” (Season 2, Episode 7)

Diana Trout is a person who both oozes with overconfidence and reeks of desperation. She’s always on the outside of a joke, and the last to know anything, which is especially true when it comes to learning Liza’s not-so-secret secret.

If that wasn’t enough, she has also always been unlucky in love. The head of marketing for Empirical is very much in the market, as the divorcée’s former husband left her for a man. She’s currently working with feminist author Hugh Shirley (David Wain), who wonders why there isn’t a monument dedicated to Eleanor Roosevelt shaped like a vulva. The two are banging out the details of his book tour (“anywhere in the Pacific Northwest within ten miles of a vegan market.”), when things get personal and they start banging each other. Score one for Diana, until he wants her to dominate him by being on top, things get a little too heated and she… breaks his penis while riding him. Ouch.

Nothing for Diana is ever easy, but so it goes for the scene stealer brilliantly played by Miriam Shor. 🍆 The rest of the episode is fantastic too, and in fact, one of the series’ best, where Liza’s out of her depth at a hipster crunchy granola-like festival called “Brewgrass”, and mistakenly sends a sexy suggestive text to Charles by mistake, with no way to correct it as her phone dies in the woods.

Maggie (Debi Mazar)

"Younger" Ep. 406 (Aired 8/2)
Photo: TV Land

EPISODE: “A Close Shave” (Season 4, Episode 6)

Liza’s BFF, current roomie and painter Maggie (Debi Mazar) seems to have more paramours than works of art that she’s sold. Business mixes with pleasure when one night out at a bar she catches the eye of Studio 29 gallery owner Donna Malone (Michelle Hurd). The flirting runs hot, and while the focus should be on Donna’s bod, Maggie is transfixed by the facial hair residing above her upper lip.

Still, she’s charmed enough to make a date with her, and invites her over for dinner. Maggie keeps the lights low, as to keep the possible mustache out of the spotlight, but there’s no avoiding the hairy elephant in the room. Smooching leads to a hot bath, and when Donna asks Maggie to shave her, she’s happy to oblige, and with a giant smile on her face and razor in hand, moves toward her face. Donna is mortified and screams, “I meant my pussy.” Oh well Maggie, there’s always the next lady coming round the corner. 🪒

Elsewhere in the ep, there’s a great, rare moment when Charles loses his sh!t to Liza, after being made jealous by her date with a former college friend.

Lauren Heller (Molly Bernard)

LAUREN YOUNGER HOT MITZVAH
Photo: TV Land

EPISODE: “Hot Mitzvah” (Season 1, Episode 11)

Publicist Lauren (Molly Bernard) is always a bit too much, but better that she’s the one doing all the outrageous stuff the show needs instead of the more mild peppers like Kelsey or Liza. One of her defining moments in the series comes in season 1 when she throws herself a “Hot Mitzvah.” Not satisfied with how her Bat Mitzvah turned out 13 years earlier, she wants to do things right at double the age. L’chaim, bitches!

Video Invites, complete with the image of her in a Star of David yarmulkes bra, are sent and everyone is down to party. Her parents (Kathy Najimy and Josh Pais) couldn’t be more proud, and party emcee K-Ron is keeping things flowing. Lauren ups the stakes by making her closest buds down a shot of Manischewitz & Molly (ecstasy), and then goes about making out with Maggie. Mazel tov! Before she can even comprehend the concoction she just took, Liza is soon loose and open enough to tell Josh that not only does she love him, but that she’s not in her twenties. Double reveal! Gasp! 😱 🕎

Zane Anders (Charles Michael Davis)

"Younger" Ep. 404 (Aired 7/19)
Photo: TV Land

EPISODE: “In The Pink” (Season 4, Episode 4)

If they were handing out superlatives to the Younger crowd, Zane Anders (Charles Michael Davis) would run away in the best smile AND best dressed categories. As soon as the rival publisher at Rivington entered the show’s frame at Belinda Lecroix’s funeral (shot at The Palace Hotel, “owned” by the Bass family from Gossip Girl), that zane-llion dollar grin and dapper pink tailored threads made everyone take notice, including the wide eyes of Kelsey. She also has her eyes on one of his authors and sets up a private meeting with him, only to be duped when Zane shows up in his place instead. The Z-man accomplishes two goals in one – reprimanding her for trying to poach one of his clients, and then getting her to be his +1 at a party.

Things go better than expected and Kelsey is hooked, but the relationship becomes a balancing act of giving it up, but not giving up too many trade secrets in the process. Over time, Zane’s charm turns to smarm, but nothing would top his introduction – smiles for miles. 😊

Caitlin Miller (Tessa Albertson)

"Younger" Ep. 507 (Airs 7/24/18)
Photo: TV Land

EPISODES: “A Christmas Miracle” (Season 5, Episode 7)

Liza’s daughter Caitlin only appeared in 17 episodes, but her being is mom’s reason and motivation for everything she does. The series began with Caitlin studying abroad, and a separation from her father sets the empty nester back into the working world. Whenever Caitlin returns to the scene, all she wants is to be one happy family again. She sorta gets her wish for one night only – when mom and dad reunite at a holiday party, and the three embarrassingly show off their annual transition of thier yodelicious rendition of “The Lonely Goatherd” from The Sound of Music. It JUST so happens that Charles is friends with the party’s hosts, catches the performance midway through, and has his breath taken away by Liza once again, setting up a different reunion we all are truly rooting for. Sorry, Caitlin. 🎄

Fun fact – Caitlin is played by Tessa Albertson, who played a younger version of Sutton Foster‘s Fiona character in the Broadway musical Shrek.

Special Bonus Best Guest Character: Jade (Justine Lupe)

YOUNGER JADE JADE CRUSADE

EPISODE: “The Jade Crusade” (Season 2, Episode 4)

Jade Winslow is a not-so-thinly veiled knock at socialite author Cat Marnell, and the wildest guest character to appear on the show. She’s a motormouth who excels at spouting “clever” verbal diarrhea (“lumbersexual,” “cliteratti”), and in the world of Younger, the hottest property that every publishing house is throwing themselves at to sign up. Her next book “is going to do to the Meatpacking District what The Jungle did to the meatpacking industry.” Kelsey badly wants her for her newly minted Millennial imprint, but in order to do so, her agent Redmond (Michael Urie, who appeared in 11 episodes) tells her that she has to be able to throw down with Jade. And off they go, trying to keep up with Jade without getting Jaded. Played to unhinged, narcissistic perfection by Justine Lupe, her Jade is so balls to the wall insanity that we wish she lasted beyond her 3 episode arc, and got her own spin-off show, Crazier. 🥜

In this same episode, Charles becomes an Instagram sensation after a picture surfaces of him with a very, very visible bulge in his pocket, and Diana and Liza are tasked with taking down any digital trace of the “The Empiriconda,” while trying not to limit their double entendres.

Michael Palan is a New York based writer and multimedia producer. He got an A+ in bowling at a midwestern university, and once handed Kurt Vonnegut his coat. In his free time he enjoys Edward Hopper paintings and eating fried chicken.
