Gal Gadot Used Princess Diana as Inspiration for Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot got the inspiration for her most celebrated character from an unlikely source. During yesterday’s Vanity Fair Cocktail Hour Live! event, the Wonder Woman actress revealed that she based her iconic superhero on another famous figure, Princess Diana. And it wasn’t just Gadot who drew a connection between Wonder Woman and Princess Diana. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins saw the link, too.

“I remember watching a documentary about Princess Diana and there was a part where they said she was full of compassion and always cared for the people and that was like, ‘Ding, ding, ding.’ That should be the Wonder Woman we have,” Gadot said, per The News. Coincidentally, her character, Diana Prince, shares the same first name as the late royal.

Gadot explained that she wanted to portray a relatable superhero onscreen, telling Vanity Fair, “How can you connect to a goddess that’s super strong and has it all and [is] super perfect? I wanted to show her vulnerabilities and heart.”

This isn’t the first time Gadot has explained the inspiration behind her Wonder Woman character. Back in 2017, when the first Wonder Woman film was hitting theaters, Gadot shared with a packed crowd at San Diego Comic-Con that she based Diana Prince off of Princess Diana. “Wonder Woman has the strength of a goddess and the heart of a human,” Gadot said, per The Daily Beast. She added, “[Princess Diana] said she leads from her heart and not from her head. And I think the same is true of our Diana.”

Gadot has played Wonder Woman in two films now, the latest being last year’s Wonder Woman 1984, which premiered both in theaters and on HBO Max on Christmas Day. She’s set to reprise her beloved superhero role in a third film, Wonder Woman 3, which will also see the return of director Patty Jenkins.

Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich confirmed the news shortly after the release of the second Wonder Woman film, sharing, “we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy,” per Variety.
