New Movies On Demand: ‘Nomadland,’ ‘Nobody’ + More

It’s that time once again to take a look at the best movies available on VOD this week! And there’s no shortage of amazing films to choose from, from the heart-wrenching to the heart-pounding. If you haven’t already seen the Oscar-nominated Nomadland, now is the time. Chloé Zhao has already won a Golden Globe for directing the film, and the film nabbed the Globe for Best Picture as well. Now that it’s available on iTunes, you have no excuse to see the film that we’ve described as “a gorgeous, heartbreaking, and empathetic portrayal of the people America pushed to the sidelines.”

Nobody saw Nobody coming. The film, from the genius behind John Wick, stars Bob Odenkirk as a cowardly suburban dad who just wants to live a normal life and not like, die at the hands of intruders who break into his home. Emasculated by the intruders, he decides to get revenge and it turns out this nobody is actually somebody who should never have been messed with. And finally, Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist is out this week, and if you’re anything like me and you’ve watched not just the original movie but every documentary about the horror classic’s production, this especially in-depth look at the life and inspirations of its now-octogenarian director is painstaking in it’s detail.

Now that you’ve heard our picks, see what else is available to buy or rent on Google Play, iTunes, Prime Video, or your cable’s service. Here’s our complete list of what to watch on VOD.

Nomadland

Nomadland, directed by Chloé Zhao, stars Frances McDormand and a small cast of actual nomads on whom the 2017 book Nomadland: Surviving America In The 21st Century is based. The book, written by Jessica Bruder, tells the story of these older Americans who travel from place to place, often in RVs, in search of seasonal or temporary work. Zhao has blended the fictional story of the widowed Fern (played by McDormand) who joins up with these real nomads to create a haunting story that, while scripted and fictitional, plays like a documentary.

Nobody

Don’t f— with Bob Odenkirk. That’s the lesson of Nobody, the acclaimed film that is basically John Wick in suburbia. And it makes sense, as it’s a product of screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who is also responsible for the Wick franchise. When intruders break into the house that Hutch Mansell (Odenkirk) and his family live in, he weakly, pathetically, doesn’t fight back. Everyone thinks he’s a wimp, a wuss, a nobody. But here’s the thing: Hutch is a trained killer who can deftly maneuver any weapon in any arsenal, he was just trying not to go that route. But now that someone has messed with his family, he’s got a real itch for vengeance that needs to be scratched.
