It’s Earth Day, and Smithsonian Channel and Paramount+ are celebrating with the release of Cher and the Loneliest Elephant, a documentary five years in the making that chronicles the singer, actress, and activist’s effort to rehabilitate the life of an elephant named Kaavan. Kaavan was held in captivity in Islamabad, Pakistan for over 20 years, and subjected to a mountain of cruelties before becoming the subject of a grassroots campaign to win his freedom.

WHAT IS CHER AND THE LONELIEST ELEPHANT ABOUT?
In 2015, an American veterinarian named Samar Khan happened across Kaavan while visiting Islamabad’s Murghazar Zoo. Horrified by the elephant’s shackles and substandard enclosure, Khan launched a social media campaign and a Change.org petition in an effort to raise awareness of Kaavan’s plight. When Cher got wind of the campaign via Twitter, she decided to get involved.
Little did the Moonstruck and Witches of Eastwick star know that her journey with Kaavan had just begun.
Through the lobbying of indifferent government officials and lawsuits filed with the Pakistani high court, to Cher writing a song devoted to Kaavan called “Walls” and launching a nonprofit organization devoted to animal welfare, all the way to Kaavan’s journey across international borders to his new home in Cambodia, Cher and the Loneliest Elephant offers a touching viewing experience that highlights humanity’s connection to the animal kingdom.
