New on Netflix April 23: Shadow & Bone

Bookworms and fantasy YA fans unite! New on Netflix this weekend is Shadow & Bone, the latest epic series that is poised to be this streaming platform’s Game of Thrones. Based on the bestselling Leigh Bardugo book series of the same name, Shadow & Bone tells the journey of young mapmaker Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) who discovers she might have the magical power to rid her homeland of a horrific scar on the landscape: the Shadow Fold. Torn from her best friend and stuck with the deliciously-dark General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), mystery, adventure, magic and heartache await this young girl whose powers have just only scratched the surface. New on HBO Max April 23: Mortal Kombat

The latest film involved in the Warner Bros.-HBO Max agreement has arrived this weekend in the release of Mortal Kombat. Inspired by the beloved ’90s video game, this violent fists-a-flyin’ flick serves as the sequel to 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. In it, we meet Cole Young (Lewis Tan): a mixed martial arts fighter who finds himself the target of mysterious assassins. Desperate to protect his family and himself, Cole turns to a team of skilled fighters and prepares to take on the evil Sub Zero himself. Prepare to watch your favorite video game warriors like Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) fight it out live-action style in Mortal Kombat, New on HBO Max this weekend.

New on Disney+ April 23: Secrets of the Whales

New on Disney+ this weekend is Secrets of the Whales, a majestic and educational docu-series about — you guessed it— the largest aquatic mammals on Earth. Secrets of the Whales is the latest Disney+ nature documentary released in honor of Earth Day, documentaries that in the past have covered adorable animals like monkeys, elephants, penguins and more endearing animals. Whales have rarely been lumped into the “cute animal” category— until now. Produced by James Cameron and narrated by Sigourney Weaver, this four-part series introduces us to a myriad of massive mammals and sheds light on just how beautiful, intelligent and personality-rife they really are. Prepare for an amazing education while watching Secrets of the Whales starting this weekend.
