New Movies On Demand: ‘Tom and Jerry,’ ‘Vanquish’ + More

Cinephiles young and old, prepare for an action-packed weekend of chases, fights, and explosions. This week, check out your options on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play, or your cable’s service to see what’s new. From Tom and Jerry, which is now available on iTunes, to the Morgan Freeman/Ruby Rose action thriller Vanquish, where Rose shows off her venerable action skills while Freeman shows off his classic speaking voice, there’s plenty to get your blood pumping.

And for documentaries that will make you think (and maybe get you to spiral a little about the state of the world, because we all need something new to spiral about now, right?), 8 Billion Angels is kind of like a real-life version of Thanos’s theory that there are just too many people in the world and we’d be better off if there were fewer of us. (Of course, there’s no suggestion that we should wipe out half the population with a finger-snap, but I can’t stop thinking about that now.) Can the earth sustain itself at this rate of population growth? Are we all doomed? Aren’t corporations actually to blame for the poor state of our environment? The doc is an eye opening look at our impact on the planet and might just get you to change course on what you think you know about the subject matter.

Tom and Jerry

The chaotic cat and mouse chase of Tom and Jerry first premiered on HBO Max back in February, and it was a pretty true-to-form version of its old self, with some updates, like its very 2021 casting of Colin Jost, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Ken Jeong in substantial roles. Tom – the cat, for the uninitiated, and his mortal mouse enemy Jerry, have always been at odds, usually resulting in loads of animal-on-animal violence. In the update, Jerry has been living in a New York City hotel and Tom has been hired to eradicate said building of all vermin, to his delight. What results is… exactly what always results when Tom and Jerry get together: attempted murder, plenty of animals being harmed during the making of the film, and loads of illegal deployment of weaponry. Perfect for kids!

Vanquish

Vanquish is kind of like Collateral meets John Wick, in that Damon, a former police commissioner (played by Morgan Freeman) enlists the help of Victoria (Ruby Rose), a former drug courier with some serious assassin skills, to pull off five dangerous hit jobs in one night. Though Victoria is retired and wants nothing more than to move away from that lifestyle, Damon blackmails her by holding her young daughter hostage until each job is complete. There are plenty of great fight scenes, and Ruby Rose continues to prove she’s a solid action star.
