WHO’S THAT GAL: Jodie Turner-Smith

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Turner-Smith stars as Lt. Commander Karen Greer in upcoming action thriller film, Without Remorse, which premieres on Amazon Prime Video this Friday, April 29th. The film is based on Tom Clancy’s 1993 thriller novel of the same name and tells the story of John Clark (Michael B. Jordan), an elite Navy SEAL who, in the midst of seeking justice for the murder of his pregnant wife (Lauren London), uncovers a secret plot that threatens to engulf the United States and Russia in an all-out war. The film is led by a talented cast that includes Jordan, Greer, London, Jamie Bell, Brett Gelman, and Colman Domingo.

Without Remorse has already generated plenty of buzz amongst book and movie lovers alike, making it one of the most highly-anticipated new releases among streaming platforms this month. Publications like The New York TimesForbes, us here at Decider, and more have all highlighted the movie as one of the top titles to look out for this month, so make sure to catch Turner-Smith and the rest of the cast’s wonderful work in Without Remorse as soon as it hits Prime this week.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Turner-Smith’s professional onscreen debut was a four-episode stint as Siren #2 in popular HBO fantasy horror drama series True Blood in 2013. From there, the actress began building up her filmography by earning credits in shows like comedy thriller Mad Dogs and crime drama Ice, as well as in movies like 2016 psychological horror The Neon Demon, 2017 comedy drama Lemon, and 2017 romantic drama Newness.

It was also in 2017 that the actress got a big break, landing the recurring role of Sgt. Azima Kandie in TNT action drama series The Last Ship. Her 20 episodes on the series helped open doors in the following years for recurring roles in other shows like Nightflyers and Jett, and helped pave the road to her first major leading feature film role as Queen in 2019 romantic road crime drama Queen & Slim (which she starred in alongside Academy Award-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya).

All of these roles, in addition to appearances in music videos like The-Dream and Kanye West’s “Walkin’ on the Moon,” Zayn Malik’s “Pillowtalk,” and Noah Cyrus and Labrinth’s “Make Me (Cry)“, have culminated in an impressive and diverse body of work over the past decade, and have helped to cement Turner-Smith as a dynamic talent who will be around in the biz for many years to come.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Luckily, you won’t have to wait too much longer to catch more of Turner-Smith, as the actress has three projects currently in the works. The first is sci-fi drama film After Yang, which also stars Justin H. Min, Colin Farrell, and Haley Lu Richardson, and takes place in a near future where a family reckons with questions of love, connection, and loss after their A.I. helper unexpectedly breaks down. The second is historical psychological thriller mini-series Anne Boelyn, led by Turner-Smith as the titular role and set during Anne’s final five months prior to her execution before she is beheaded for treason in 1536. Finally, you can look out for Turner-Smith in thriller film Borderland, which also features John Boyega, Felicity Jones, and Jack Reynor, and revolves around an IRA member who hunts for his wife’s murderer, while also being tracked by the same killer.
