Tig Notaro’s Animated Stand-Up Special to Premiere on HBO

Fresh off trending for her “sexy AF” appearance in the Army of the Dead trailer, comedian Tig Notaro is bringing her talents back to HBO with a new comedy special. Described as “the first-ever fully animated stand-up special,” the untitled project comes from executive producer Ellen DeGeneres, and will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max.

Notaro’s special marks her third collaboration with DeGeneres after the Ellen Show host executive produced 2018’s Tig Notaro Happy To Be Here, and Notaro co-directed the Netflix special Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable.

“After having had the pleasure of seeing bits and pieces of my comedy animated over the years by some talented artists, I became DRAWN to the idea of creating a fully animated hour,” Notaro said in a press release for the special. “Stand-up can be a very solitary art form, so combining it with a collaborative years-long creative effort was such a joyful experience. I’m so proud of this special and can’t wait for everyone to be fully vaccinated watching with their Nana.”

DeGeneres added, “I’m so excited for everyone to see Tig’s new special. I told her since it was animated that we should have Dory in it, but she awkwardly changed the subject.  But it’s still hilarious.”

The upcoming special was first announced by Nina Rosenstein, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming. “Tig is truly an original and this animated special solidifies her status as an artist who constantly transcends expectations,” Rosenstein said in a statement. “We’re so excited to have her back on HBO with this fresh take on stand-up.”

Animation studio Six Point Harness will produce the animation for Notaro’s special. The company previously worked on the Oscar-winning short Hair Love, plus Lazor Wulf and Guava Island, and Netflix’s Michelle Obama series Waffles + Mochi.

Notaro’s HBO project marks her fourth comedy special, after 2004’s Comedy Central Presents, 2015’s Boyish Girl Interrupted, and 2018’s Happy To Be Here. Her animated special is her second with HBO, where Boyish Girl Interrupted also premiered.

Over the years, she’s appeared in multiple shows including Inside Amy Schumer, Transparent, Star Trek: Discovery, and Bob’s Burgers. From 2015-2017, she had her own series, One Mississippi, a semi-autobiographic comedy on Amazon Prime Video. Next up for Notaro is Zack Snyder’s Netflix zombie movie Army of the Dead, plus Other Plans and Am I OK?
