New on Netflix May 7: Jupiter’s Legacy

Sci-fi/fantasy book adaptations are finding a strong foothold in Netflix between Shadow & Bone and this week’s newest release: Jupiter’s Legacy. New on Netflix this weekend, this adaptation of the book by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely takes us back to the dawn of the first-ever superheroes and follows the now-aging heroes as they look to pass the mantle (and their powers) to their children. The children — in typical next-generation fashion — want to do things a bit differently as they struggle to uphold the legacies left behind by their parents. Watch this evergreen struggle play out through overturned cars and catastrophic fires in one of the top shows new on Netflix this month, Jupiter’s Legacy.

New on Hulu May 7: Shrill Season 3

Funny lady Aidy Bryant is back — and making her directorial debut, might we add — in season 3 of the original comedy series Shrill, new on Hulu this weekend. In the third and final season of this beloved show, we find our heroine, Annie (Aidy Bryant), using her breakup with dud boyfriend Ryan (Luka Jones) as fuel for her newfound momentum at her job. But is this recent rise in success really all that it is cracked up to be? Follow Annie as she continues to question everything as she and her friends (which include Lolly Adefope, Patti Harrison, and Jo Firestone) go through the trials and triumphs of life together.

New on Amazon Prime Video May 7: The Boy From Medellín

New on Prime Video this weekend is The Boy From Medellín, the original film that paints an astonishingly intimate and complex portrait of one of the biggest international superstars of our time: J Balvin. The documentary follows the LatinX star as he prepares for the most important concert of his career: a sold-out stadium show in his hometown of Medellín, Colombia. But as the performance date nears, the streets of his hometown and country explode with political unrest, forcing the Grammy-winning musician to wrestle with his responsibility to his fans and to his country as a Colombian citizen. Throughout all of this, we meet the real man behind the music, a man who has been dealing with anxiety and depression for a large portion of his life. Shot entirely in the dramatic week leading up to the concert, The Boy From Medellín gives the viewer unprecedented access to “the prince of reggaeton” as he prepares for one of the most emotional and pivotal moments of his life.
