‘Supergirl’ Introduces Azie Tesfai as the New Guardian

Supergirl may be heading towards its endgame, but there’s still time to introduce a new superhero. Or at least, a new take on an older one, as Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai) will be grabbing her brother’s old costume and suiting up as Guardian in the show’s September 21 airing episode.

First worn by Mehcad Brooks’ Jimmy Olsen, Tesfai’s Kelly has — up until now — not really taken on a superhero identity. She’s been dating Chyler Leigh’s Alex Danvers, who has herself taken on the superhero identity of Sentinel; and been hanging around with the rest of the superheroes on The CW show. But in the second half of Supergirl Season 6, Kelly will take up the name of Guardian, leading to her officially donning the suit you see below in Episode 12, titled “Blind Spots.”

Tesfai won’t just be snapping on a super-suit, though, she’s also picking up a pencil (or more likely, laptop) and co-writing the episode with series co-producer J. Holtham. And not only that, the episode — which addresses racial inequality — will be directed by none other than David Ramsey, who will guest star as Arrow‘s John Diggle.

What will Diggle — who himself took on the superhero name Spartan pretty late in Arrow‘s run — and the new Guardian have to do with each other? As people used to supporting the heroes in their lives, and two regular humans in the midst of sci-fi craziness — let alone two Black Americans, given the subject matter of the episode — they probably have a lot to discuss.

Though Supergirl is currently airing on Tuesday nights, after next week’s episode on May 11 the series will take an extended break while Superman & Lois continues its Freshman season. It will then return on August 24 at 9/8c to complete the final run of episodes in the season, leading to the series finale.
