‘Friends’ Reunion to Premiere in May on HBO Max

The one where we finally get a premiere date! After countless delays, the Friends reunion is officially coming to HBO Max later this month, the streamer announced today. In a teaser for the highly anticipated special, HBO Max shared a sneak peek at what’s to come, with cast members Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer back together again.

While the clip is clocks in at under a minute, it’s enough to get any Friends fan excited. Seeing the original cast with their arms around one another again is just a taste of what’s in store for the reunion special, but we won’t have to wait much longer. The Friends reunion will premiere in just two weeks on Thursday, May 27, which just happens to be the one-year anniversary of the HBO Max launch.

When they return to their original soundstage at the Warner Bros. Studio lot, the Friends cast will be joined by a slew of special guests —  18, to be exact. David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon and Malala Yousafzai will all appear in the reunion, HBO Max announced.

The Friends special will be an unscripted show, which has been dubbed a “celebration” of the iconic sitcom and its lasting legacy. The show, which first premiered in 1994, ended after 10 seasons in 2004. While the reunion was originally set to premiere last year, filming was postponed in March 2020 due to the coronavirus. The special was put on hold again in May with hopes to film in August. Earlier this year, Kudrow revealed that she’d already filmed some of the reunion and that the rest would be completed in the coming months.

While the stars have been keeping details about the reunion under wraps, Cox told Ellen DeGeneres this month it “was unbelievable” to get back together with her costars. “It was so emotional,” she said. “It’s an unscripted reunion, but we got to be on Stage 24 for the first time, all of us in, like, I forgot how many years. 15 years? 17 years?”

The Friends reunion is directed and executive produced by Ben Winston with Friends executive producers Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane. The special comes from Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon, Fulwell 73 Productions and Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions. All six Friends stars executive produced the special, and Emma Conway, James Longman and Stacey Thomas-Muir co-executive produced.
