If you are a fan of adult animated superhero shows and have yet to see Invincible, look no further. The critically acclaimed Robert Kirkman creation stars Steven Yeun and Sandra Oh and like The Boys, is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. If you’re a more recent fan of superhero dramas, Heroes may be before your time, but it is obligatory viewing. The NBC series was a staple of 2000’s TV (the peak of cable!) and follows a group of ordinary people with extraordinary abilities. It adopts the plot structure of a comic book, with each story line developing in the form of volumes. However, Heroes is also an intimate drama that zeroes in on the more intimate details of each character’s life.

No other superhero has a premise as original as The Umbrella Academy. The Netflix adaption of the comic book series, which has a third season on the way, follows dozens of women around the world as they give birth at the same time, after showing no signs of pregnancy. Seven of the children born under these extraordinary circumstances are adopted by a billionaire and join what is dubbed “The Umbrella Academy” due to their special abilities. Elliot Page and the rest of the cast deliver a stellar performance, so even if traditional comic adaptations aren’t your thing, The Umbrella Academy will be.

Jessica Jones was great while it lasted, despite dying a premature death at the hands of the ever-ruthless Netflix executives. The critically acclaimed series follows the eponymous character, Jessica Jones, a superhero-turned-detective. Helmed by Krysten Ritter, it revolves around the life of its sardonic protagonist, who runs her own detective agency and suffers from PTSD after her stint as a superhero.
