When it comes to sitcom reunions, it’s really hard to think of one as perfect and as thorough as Friends: The Reunion. Not only did we get to see them interviewed onstage in front of an audience, we also saw them hang out with each other on the original Friends sets, we saw them read through some of the most iconic moments in the show’s run, and we watched them recreate the trivia game. We got all that plus celebrity guest stars, bloopers, behind-the-scenes looks at how they made the series, and a fashion show. What else could you want?! And if your answer to that is “a new episode of Friends,” it’s never going to happen.
Host James Corden flat-out asked the cast if they’ve ever contemplated doing a reunion movie, series, or just an episode, and the response—as it has been since the show ended—was a negative. “No,” said Kudrow, definitively. “I’m sorry, I haven’t.”
Don’t hate, because Kudrow has a good reason for not wanting to return! “No, because that’s all up to [series creators] Marta [Kauffman] and David [Crane],” she explained. “And I once heard them say, and I completely agree, that they ended the show very nicely. Everyone’s lives are very nice, and they would have to unravel all those good things in order for there to be stories. Yeah, I don’t want anyone’s happy ending unraveled.”
She is absolutely right. The only reason revivals happen is because some catastrophe occurs, like a husband dying in a fire (Fuller House) or a megalomaniac being elected to the White House (Will & Grace). Hell, the start of Friends begins with a broken engagement and a divorce! To wish for more Friends is to wish problems upon our beloved characters.
Later in the special, Courteney Cox went a step further and put the kibosh on any petitions for the cast to do a reunion special again. While the cast are seated in Monica’s living room set, Cox says, “This will be the last time that we’re ever asked about the show as a group, that we will do this. We’re not going to do this again in 15 more years.” That doesn’t mean this is the last time the cast will get together, though. “I tell you one thing: we are not waiting so long to have a dinner,” Cox added. Aniston agreed: “We will not wait that long to get together.”
So it looks like there will be more Friends reunions in the future, it’s just that the guest list will be capped at six.
