7 Shows Like ‘Friends’

The Friends reunion special has finally arrived on HBO Max. And, sadly, the Friends cast has announced that this will be their last time on screen together (but we’ll see about that, right?) — meaning that if you’ve watched the reunion and all 10 seasons of the series, you’ve run out of content. Oh, no! But worry not: if you’re looking for shows to fill the Friends void, there are plenty of similar sitcoms that are just as endearing and just as iconic. We’ve got a few recommendations up our sleeve, because we’ll be there for you.

Friends: The Reunion aired yesterday (May 27) on HBO Max, and we sure learned a lot about the filming of the series. For example: the real Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) nearly had a romance of their own. Wild! And Schwimmer hated that monkey, because who wouldn’t? Lady Gaga teamed up with Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) to knock out a performance of “Smelly Cat.” The reunion will be forever memorialized on HBO Max, where Friends fans can also binge-watch the series.

Yearning for a new crew of buddies with inside jokes? We have some recommendations. Here are seven shows like Friends to stream:

1

'Seinfeld'

Seinfeld is obviously a classic sitcom, but if you haven’t watched it yet, here’s your sign to start! The series is quite similar to Friends, only down two women from the ensemble. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld leads the show, which follows his hilarious life in New York City as a stand-up comic. There’s a traditional coffee spot. There’s a historic apartment. And, of course, there are a bevy of inside jokes (Festivus! Soup Nazi!) to keep you entertained along the way.

'Living Single'

Living Single is another series that’s ever-so-similar to Friends, following the lives of six 20-somethings in New York City. They share their lives together in one epic brownstone — three women living in one apartment, two men in another, and one friend who pops her head in every once-in-awhile. Living Single certainly had a massive impact on Friends, which only came out a year after the sitcom debuted. And it features Queen Latifah in one of her breakthrough roles!

'Cougar Town'

Cougar Town features Friends star Courteney Cox as a divorced mother forced to face the realities of aging and dating all over again. Having spent the majority of her 20s dealing with her child and her marriage, she jumps at the idea of starting her young life all over again. So, she comes of age as a 40-year-old woman, trying new experiences with her extended family and the “Cul-de-Sac Crew.”

'Episodes'

Episodes casts another Friends star, Matt LeBlanc, as a comedy legend. He plays an actor who’s recently been cast in a British remake of a popular American TV series that’s been rising in the trends overseas. But as he attempts to rework the show, he ends up affecting the main cast’s marriage and the story as a whole. He’s more than unsuited for the role, though try as he might, he’s incredibly endearing.

Happy Endings follows the major fall-out of a friend group after one of the friends leaves another at the alter. Dave and Alex have been the happy couple of the group for ages — until Alex leaves Dave. Suddenly, the group must re-evaluate their relationships with one another, and they attempt to restore the relationship that glued them together. The sitcom follows the friend group through their rocky stages, hoping that one day, they’ll be one happy family again.

Coupling is the British parallel to Friends: six twenty-somethings all meet and share interpersonal relationships with one another. They date, they break up, they have inside jokes, and they all come of age together. They bring baggage from the past, all hoping they can use one another to learn from their mistakes. They discuss past relationships, nag at each other, and become incredibly close as a friend group in contemporary England.

How I Met Your Mother is a classic joining the ranks of Friends — if you haven’t watched the entire series yet, now is your reminder to do so! A new spin-off staring Hilary Duff, How I Met Your Father, is heading to Hulu soon, and you’ll certainly want to be all caught up. The original series follows Ted in a handful of flashbacks, explaining the events that led him to meet the mother of his kids. Along the way, there are a handful of hijinks featuring Ted’s four close friends, an ensemble of unforgettable folks.
