Where do we leave all of the cast? And when will Season 6 premiere on Netflix? Read on for all the info—after a breakdown of how Season 5 wraps up.

Does Lucifer Season 5 end on a cliffhanger? Lucifer Season 5 ending explained

Okay, strap in, because you’re getting on a spoiler-coaster. Everything goes to hell for Lucifer and his human friends in the final two episodes of Season 5, all because Lucy’s evil twin Michael wants to take over the family business and become God. He hires a bunch of henchmen and hitmen to steal all the pieces of the Flaming Sword and, in doing so, comes across a can’t-miss opportunity. When Det. Dan gets in the way of Michael’s lackeys, they shoot him. Repeatedly. And Dan dies. Like, seriously—he’s six feet under and, even worse, he’s not in Heaven because he still felt guilt at the time of his death. Turns out Michael ordered Dan’s death so that Det. Chloe would feel guilty over her ex taking on a case alone. Why does Michael want Chloe to feel guilty? So she can die and go to Hell—and Lucifer will assuredly follow her, thus getting rid of the only competition for rule of Heaven.

Backed into a corner and enraged by the cruelty of life, Lucifer vows to take control of Heaven and become God. He does so by crashing his family’s vote along with some allies (Det. Decker, Amenadiel, Maze, Eve, and a bunch of fresh demons). War breaks out between the two factions and, in the melee, Michael kills Chloe. But before she dies, she frees herself of guilt and tells Lucifer to not feel guilty either. Knowing she’s now in Heaven, Lucifer does the risky thing of flying to Heaven—y’know, the place he’s been banished from. Up there he finds Chloe having a picnic with her father, and Lucifer’s stunned that he’s in Heaven and not turning to ash. He realizes it’s because he’s still wearing his iconic ring, a ring that grants immortality to the wearer. He slips it on Chloe’s finger, granting her immortality and leaving him vulnerable to Heaven’s wrath against the banished. Lucifer is destroyed.

But Chloe’s back on Earth and in her body—and she wrecks Michael’s shit thoroughly. But before she can kill Michael, Lucifer stops her. Yep, Lucifer is back on Earth! Somehow he didn’t die! How? Well, after Lucifer uses the Flaming Sword to chop off Michael’s wings, every one of his angelic brothers and sisters kneel before him. Looks like we got a new God on our hands.

So where does this leave the cast going into the final season? Maze and Eve are back together and kicking ass. Ella still does not know that Lucifer is Lucifer, which is beyond ridiculous at this point! God’s reunited with his wife and chilling in her dimension. Chloe put in her notice at the precinct, but who knows if she’ll rescind it after all that’s happened. Amenadiel’s application to the police academy was submitted, as Det. Dan’s last act. Dan is still in Hell and… maybe dead dead? Can God, a.k.a. Lucifer, use his power to undo that?
