7 Movies Like ‘The Conjuring’

When it comes to The Conjuring, recommending similar films seems a little too easy. That’s because there’s already an entire franchise devoted to the paranormal activities surrounding investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson). The Conjuring Universe, which is available to stream in entirety on HBO Max, includes horrors like AnnabelleThe Nun, and The Curse of La Llorona, and if you love The Conjuring, you should definitely watch them all. But let’s assume you’ve already watched them all, as a dedicated Conjuring fan — we’ve got some similar horrors to watch if you love everything under Conjuring realm.

The latest Conjuring film, The Devil Made Me Do It, will release this Friday on HBO Max and in theaters simultaneously. It’s set to follow Lorraine and Ed on a new terrifying quest: after a man is put on trial for murder, he defends himself by claiming he was forced to commit the crime under satanic possession. You’ve got a week to keep yourself busy before the thrills ramp up again, so why not have a horror movie marathon?

'Lights Out'

Lights Out follows Rebecca, a young woman who evades her childhood nightmares only to be thrust right back into them. This horror is a haunted house film tracing the strange occurrences of a setting that changes every time the lights are turned off. Lights on? All is normal. Lights off? Everything starts to get a little creepy. Rebecca starts noticing supernatural interference that distracts her younger brother, realizing that the ghost only appears when the lights are all off. If they want to stay safe, they’ll have to keep all of those switches turned up.

'Unfriended'

Unfriended is one of the first popular screen movies — meaning the entire film takes place on one thrilling computer screen. Viewers can watch the main character’s every move, from click to type to send message. In the first Unfriended (if you enjoy it, there’s a sequel, Unfriended: Dark Web), a gang of teens join a Skype call and start gossiping through a seemingly normal conversation. But when an unknown account joins the call with no name, no image, and a handful of threats, the teens grow suspicious of its true intentions.

'Insidious'

Insidious features The Conjuring star Patrick Wilson in another horror role. Even more good news: just like The ConjuringInsidious is one installment in a handful of other Insidious films. If you enjoy the first, there are more just like it waiting for you to watch. Insidious follows a young boy trapped in a comatose space and his family, who try to save him from the evil spirits that have locked him in his mind. In order to prevent them from luring him into The Further, his family try to battle the evil spirits that lurk amongst their household.

'The Possession'

The Possession follows another family, led by teenaged Em, who’s recently found herself obsessed with an antique wooden box from a yard sale. Her parents aren’t worried at first, but as the infatuation grows and Em becomes unstable, they become suspicious of the box’s powers. They soon learn that the box is home to a dybbuk: a dislocated spirit that must locate and possess a human host. Em’s parents must ward off this malevolent force before it devours Em’s soul.

'Saw'

There are plenty of films in the Saw franchise, including the most recent Spiral, which is currently in theaters. Since all of the films are currently streaming on HBO Max with The Conjuring franchise, why not pair both for some true horror madness? The first installment, which was released in 2004, follows a photographer and an oncologist who wake up chained to a pipe in some random, dirty bathroom. They’ve been kidnapped by Jigsaw, and are forced to complete his bizarre puzzles in order to escape from harm’s way.

'Sinister'

Sinister stars Ethan Hawke as true-crime writer Ellison Oswald, who’s just hit his worst case of writer’s block yet. He hasn’t had a best-seller in over 10 years — seeing as he can’t get out of a slump, Ellison embroils himself in a real mystery. He locates a family who fell victim to a brutal murder and moves into their home, vowing to solve the case. But when he realizes a supernatural force may be at play, Ellison starts to think he, himself is in grave danger of being killed via the same crime.

'The Ring'

The Ring is a Gore Verbinski horror flick following one horrifying, foreshadowing videotape and the nightmare that follows. Newspaper reporter Rachel Keller is suspicious of the videotape that supposedly put a handful of teenagers in harm’s way, so she decides to investigate. Bad decision. She watches the tape, giving her just seven days to solve the mystery and save herself from the same grace danger she wanted to unravel in the first place.
