‘Jupiter’s Legacy’ Ends at Netflix as Creator Pursues Spinoff Project

Jupiter’s Legacy has come to a close after just one season at Netflix, creator Mark Millar announced today. The series, which debuted just last month on the streamer, has cut all of the cast involved with the project as Millar pursues a new show, Supercrooks. Jupiter’s Legacy hasn’t been canceled, per se — in his tweet announcing the news, Millar mentioned that the team may return at a later date.

Jupiter’s Legacy is a vast and rich space with lots of characters to mine and so I’m happy to share that our next step here is a live-action version of the Supercrooks comic I created with Leinil Francis Yu a few years back,” Millar wrote. “Given where we’re going next, we’ve made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter’s Legacy saga. We’re confident that we’ll return to it later and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great.”

So, for now, say your goodbyes to Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, and the rest of the original Jupiter’s Legacy cast. But don’t say goodbye to the Millarworld at Netflix just yet: the plan is to develop a series based on the villains of the show, following Millar’s Supercrook comics in the same universe, tossing it under the “anthology” umbrella.

“I’ve always loved crime stories from Scorsese to Tarantino and super-villains are always the most fun part of any superhero story,” Millar explained. “To do something exclusively focused on the villains they fight just feels incredibly fresh as we explore what it’s like to be a bad guy in a world crawling with good guys who want to put you in jail.”

Millar went on to state that Supercrooks will still debut as an anime series from Studio Bones later this year. The animated show is set to debut at the Annecy Animation Festival this month, though it’s completely different from the live-action Netflix series Millar announced today.

“I’m really proud of what the team achieved with Jupiter’s Legacy and the amazing work everyone did on that origin season,” Millar wrote. “I’ve been asked a lot about what we’re planning next with this world and the answer is to see what the super-villains are getting up to.”
