Edge of the World

Some stories develop and new details are discovered within them over time. In this week’s new movies on VOD, there are several retellings of tales, both classic and new, starting with Edge of the World, the story of Sir James Brooke, on whom dozens of stories, including The Man Who Would Be King and Apocalypse Now, were based. There’s also Flashback, a thriller in which our young hero (Dylan O’Brien) can’t stop a flood of memories and dreams he’s been having about an old friend, and with the help of some illicit drugs, he needs to go back into his memories to find out what happened to her.

And finally, we have a new version of a classic European myth with Undine. In classic mythology, Undine herself is a water nymph who can only be made human by getting a man to fall in love with her, and she is doomed to die if he is ever unfaithful. The folk tale has been given a modern take by German director Christian Petzold as he tells the tale of Undine (Paula Beers), a woman whose lover breaks up with her, to which she responds, “If you leave, I will have to kill you.” But what unfolds is a magical, mysterious tale as Undine finds new love and at least temporarily puts his death on hold. Will Undine live happily ever after with her new love, or will she have to follow through on her mythological destiny and kill off the man who betrayed her?

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Edge Of The World

Sir James Brooke was a real person who was so notable that he’s had several famous stories written about his life, most notably Rudyard Kipling’s The Man Who Would Be King, Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim, and Apocalypse Now. Edge Of The World stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Brooke, a 19th century British soldier who, after assisting the Sultan of Brunei thwart a rebellion, was given his own private kingdom called the Raj of Sarawak, an independent state on the island of Borneo. Though this is a period piece taking place nearly 200 years ago, the visual comparisons to Coppola’s Apocalypse are undeniable.

Flashback

Stylistically, Flashback is like what would happen if a Nine Inch Nails video were to cross-pollinate with a quarter-life-crisis drama. Frederick, played by Dylan O’Brien, is a young professional with a steady office job, but he slowly loses his focus at work and the rest of his life when he begins to have trippy flashbacks of a girl named Cindy (Maika Monroe) he knew in high school who disappeared. Frederick and his friends, who all took a mysterious drug called Mercury in high school, reunite in order to piece together what happened to Cindy, but the only way to do that is to go back on the drug to piece together their memories from 15 years earlier.
