What happened on RPDR Down Under Episode 5 ?

What didn’t happen on Down Under Episode 5?! The queens mourned the loss of Anita Wigl’it for a minute… and then quickly moved on with the competition. The library opened in time for this week’s mini challenge, allowing the queens to read each other to filth. This was quite possibly the best reading challenges in Drag Race herstory. Choice reads:

  • Kita to Elektra: “Elektra Shock, man—…”
  • Kita to Etcetera: “For someone who is so woke, I’m wondering when you’re gonna wake the fuck up.”
  • Maxi to Scarlet: “The only time she’s got something between her ears is when she’s sucking dick.”
  • Art to Elektra: “If I were you, I’d get a COVID test because you’ve clearly lost your sense of taste.”
  • Art to Etcetera: “Out of drag, Etcetera uses they/them pronouns, so for example: They haven’t been in the top so we won’t be seeing them in the final.”

The win could’ve gone to many of the queens, but Art’s read of Etcetera is already canon, it’s legendary, it’s iconique. So yeah, Art Simone won the mini challenge.

For the maxi challenge, the queens had to create and market a yeast spread of their own in a commercial. The phrase “yeast spread” gave these queens an inch and, lordy, did they take a mile. Art Simone and Scarlet Adams’s commercials were definitely not good enough to win, but weren’t offensive enough to be in the bottom.

However, RuPaul did take a moment on the main stage to address something that came up in the Werk Room chat: Scarlet Adams’s history of performing in blackface and appropriating other cultures. It was, uh, well… the whole thing’s a mess! If you want more context, you can watch Scarlet’s talk about racism with drag performer Fez Faanana. And also, if you aren’t following Jojo Zaho and Coco Jumbo, the indigenous queens of Down Under Season 1, what’s going on?

Perpetual underdog Elektra Shock came out on top this week with far and away the best commercial of the bunch. And Maxi and Etcetera found themselves in the bottom for ads that were too timid and too vulgar, respectively. When the smoke cleared on their lip sync, Etcetera was told to sashay away.

Drag Race Down Under Episode 5’s Sam Neill conection

If I can’t use coverage of Drag Race Down Under to celebrate my favorite actor—who just so happens to be from New Zealand—then when can I? On the runway this week, Maxi Shield serving Picnic at Hanging Frock realness, which is a riff on the Aussie New Wave classic film Picnic at Hanging Rock. That film is set in 1900, roughly around the same time that another iconic example of ’70s down under cinema takes place. That film is My Brilliant Career.

Honestly, Maxi Shield could’ve said she was serving My Brilliant Ca-Sheer and turning a lewk inspired by Judy Davis’ free-spirited leading lady and you wouldn’t be able to find the lie. And if you want to see young Sam Neill at his absolute swooniest, My Brilliant Career is a must see.
