Netflix’s Sweet Tooth is filled with characters that you really root for and want to spend time with. Seriously—if you have to go on a cross country trek, wouldn’t you want to do so with Gus and Jepperd? And what a trek it is—! This show is filled with so many sweeping vistas and gorgeous landscapes, you may even forget that this show takes place in a post-apocalyptic nightmare world.
But where in the world can you find wide open spaces like the ones captured on film in Sweet Tooth? No, really, where in the world? If you want to go where Sweet Tooth roamed, you better get ready for a long, long flight.
Where was Sweet Tooth filmed?
Even though the series follows Gus’s journey from Yellowstone Park in Wyoming down to Colorado, Sweet Tooth was filmed in New Zealand. Yeah, that’s about as far away from Yellowstone as you can get.
But how did Sweet Tooth, an American production, film in New Zealand while the country was on near total lockdown due to COVID-19? Sweet Tooth was one of a very small group of productions granted entry into New Zealand in July 2020. Also allowed in were the Avatar films, the Lord of the Rings television series, and Power Rangers: Dino Fury. And even though New Zealand had a much better handle on the pandemic than most countries, filming on Sweet Tooth was still interrupted by a spike in cases before resuming in September and wrapping in December 2020.

If you’re familiar with New Zealand productions, you may even recognize some of the names working on Sweet Tooth. For example, director and New Zealander Toa Fraser helmed a number of episodes in Sweet Tooth Season 1. The cast also includes a bunch of actors from Australia—like Mia Artemis, who plays Tiger—and New Zealand—like Sarah Peirse, who plays Dr. Bell.
So if you’re wondering why Sweet Tooth’s stunning setting looks different from America (I’m just saying—Gus and Jeppard would’ve come across at least one Walmart on their journey), it’s because it was filmed down under where the Hobbits roam.
Sweet Tooth Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
